Arthur Hayes

Arthur Hayes is the co-founder and former CEO of BitMEX, the crypto derivatives exchange he launched in 2014 with Ben Delo and Samuel Reed, where he invented the perpetual swap, now the most widely traded crypto financial product in the world. A Wharton graduate, he began his career as an equity derivatives trader at Deutsche Bank and Citigroup in Hong Kong before turning to Bitcoin. In 2022 he pleaded guilty to a Bank Secrecy Act violation tied to BitMEX's compliance failures and was sentenced to six months of home detention and a $10 million fine; President Trump pardoned him and his co-founders in March 2025. He now runs Maelstrom, his family office, as chief investment officer, and remains one of crypto's most widely read macro commentators through his long-form essays and podcast appearances.
