Web3 weekly rollup: Ukraine crypto donations, Ukraine DAO and Minecraft

4 Mar 2022 · 53:27

Jay Hamilton and Kyle Reidhead look at how crypto showed up in the war in Ukraine: Bitcoin-ruble volume at a record, on-chain donations of over $40 million tracked on Dune Analytics, and the Ukrainian government dropping a planned token airdrop in favour of NFTs, which the hosts say still drew a donation surge. They discuss how a multisig-run Ukraine DAO changes spending decisions. The show also covers Minecraft's reported Polygon plans, advertising and data ownership in web3, Coinbase NFT's waitlist and a Bakery DAO newsletter NFT as NFT of the month.

what's up friends welcome to web3 academy a place for entrepreneurs creators and marketers to explore and learn how to use web 3 to transform business models and create thriving communities enjoy this next episode [Music] welcome welcome welcome hello web through academy hello doers hello web 3 enthusiasts welcome to the weekly roll up uh it is march 3rd of 2022 first week of march wow time is flying by already in this year uh and we got you the weekly roll up this year this week my name is jay hamilton uh i'm coming at you as always from whistler canada uh where i am a entrepreneur uh and uh constantly evolving web3 marketer

and as always i got my my brother my buddy kai with me what's up guys kyle here in medellin i'm gonna co-work today and selena if you guys are nomads i'm sure you all know selena especially if you're in latin america and uh excited for this roll up we got some good stuff for you today awesome so today uh let's let's just break down what we got for today we got a sort of three main topics for today uh first we're going to talk about um ukraine and russia uh and how web 3 is impacting the war that's going on and a lot of efforts around supporting those we're talking about advertising in web3

and where that's going and where we see that going in the future of that and then we're going to start something new uh which is we're going to do an nft of the month uh kyle and i were talking about how we want to highlight more nft dow projects that are happening uh and so each month we're gonna do an nft of the month and then we're gonna dial the month and so today we'll start with nft but and we're gonna do web three web three tool of the month as well at some point that's right and web three two a month uh really focus you know that's the point of web3 academy giving you guys a breakdown of the projects and tools that are out there that you can be using uh for your business or examples of case studies that you might learn from in

order to implement them yourself but before we jump in uh as always we start all of our meetings kyle and i meet several times a week and we start all of our meetings with gratitude because gratitude's so important to us kyle why don't you go first today what are you grateful for what am i grateful for uh i am grateful for my uh my parents i'm going to visit them in what's today thursday in two days in florida i'm gonna spend a week with them uh they're they're from canada but they're escaping the cold and going to florida and uh so i'm gonna go stay with them for a week uh which isn't the best because they're staying in like a little condo but uh i'm excited to see them

it's been a few months so uh definitely grateful for them nice shout out bill and sue what's up [Laughter] i am grateful for the web3 academy discord uh i'm grateful for all of the members i would say they're vulnerability um i think that there's a there's a real real big imposter syndrome uh when it comes to new technology uh you know you jump in and it's so easy to feel lost and feel like you don't have a clue because things are changing so fast and i've been so inspired and so impressed with the number of people in the web 3 discord that are just honestly asking questions they're

not afraid to be like hey i have no idea about this can somebody help me out hey where do you see this going uh it's really cool to see um the level of vulnerability and then the level of support the number of people that are jumping in and answering questions is awesome to see as well absolutely okay uh what what is our web 3 word of the week kyle the web 3 word of the week is actually more than one word i don't know if i'm allowed to do that but i think it's it's uh it's a it's a not a saying it's a term but it's product market fit i think right now more than not more than ever but um web 3 is finding a product market fit

for a lot of people and on a global stage and that really excites me um and when i say that it's basically what we're going to talk about here with ukraine and russia and what's happening there um crypto is playing a big role in multiple different ways and that's why i say this word because crypto has so many product market fits and it keeps finding them over the last few years and it's like there isn't just one thing that this thing does it does so many and every time it finds a new product market fit it onboards a bunch of new people then it finds the next one it onboards a bunch of new people and you just see this chart of wallet addresses going up and up and up and up because there's nfts and defy and dows and then there's you know cross-border payments blah blah

blah and it's just like as more things get unlocked more people find out about web3 and then it just enters people into the ecosystem and then it's just so seamless from there um so yeah that's my word it's a term so uh we'll we'll allow it for this week all right well let's jump into the roll-up uh first topic we got a bunch on this one uh is uh ukraine russia we're not going to dive into the geopolitical situation or the war situation although our thoughts are with everybody that's over there uh obviously a challenging time but what we want to focus on is how is web3 helping and like kyle said what are the new innovations and product market fits that are coming out of this

opportunity uh when you have um you know a global situation where there's so much need absolutely so first um first thing we have up on the screen here is a gentleman named artium ferrosoft and he's from ukraine lives in ukraine uh and basically what he tweeted out was my ukrainian credit cards don't work anymore i'm safe physically in kazakhstan but all my savings are gone crypto is the only money i still have and today i can say without exaggeration that bitcoin ethan nfts are going to save my life while i can't come back home um and i think this isn't the only person this is happening to um but this is pretty incredible product market fit right there

unfortunate situation but just nice that he has whether it's on a treasure or a ledger or maybe he just memorized his 12 words he doesn't have to carry anything or bring anything with him across the border right and this is true of anywhere like if you try to bring a bunch of cash across borders you can't really do that you try to bring bars of gold well that's very difficult to do it's very easy to remember 12 words or just bring a tiny little you know hardware wallet with you and there's all of your value that can just cruise with you um so pretty amazing to see what mainly bitcoiners for like 12 years now have been talking about it like this is this is why we need this stuff and it's happening in real time right now uh and we're seeing it be that useful for for

people specifically in ukraine yeah incredible such a powerful tweet so simple but wow so this one's uh quite interesting it's not just ukraine that's benefiting um from this it's uh it's also russia so obviously there's been a lot of sanctions to the banks in russia and um and and russian citizens aren't able to accept payments from people from other countries they're having difficulties uh getting money um and so uh crypto has played a role for for them as well um and this chart here that we're looking at is the bitcoin versus um the is it the ruble the rubble whatever the russian currency is um yeah ruble uh

it's the daily volume and it's actually at an all-time high ever um for uh bitcoin ruble because what also happened is the um uh the price of ruble or what it's worth tanked right obviously they can't move any money around capital flows are stuck um so the ruble went down versus let's say the usd um it went down a lot versus bitcoin of course and so um a lot of russians uh citizens were moving their ruble into into bitcoin which makes complete sense it's saving them from inflation uh and a devaluing of a currency and again it allows them to use it and move freely considering a lot of banks are currently um i guess blocked as the best term uh right now

and and just to give a picture of the graph that we're looking at for those listeners out there the uh the the average of volume in a typical day over the last uh this is over about the last year and a half um sorry the last six months is probably around 250 million okay that's about the average uh it peaked one day in december at around 750 million uh over the last few days we're up at um 1.5 billion you know so just off the charts it's it's it's truly it's mind-blowing to see to see that

and so this is why i pulled up what we have here on uh now is dune analytics and dune analytics is basically a um an analytics platform for on-chain activity so meaning it's reading the blockchain and it's looking at what's happening and you remember that a blockchain is completely open and transparent so whatever is happening with a protocol or with different um currencies or whatever you can see it all you can see where the wallets are moving to you can see the volumes you can see whatever which just makes one it just makes it super super cool you can see everything live and so this particular script that has been written here to um to track the analytics is the donations being made to your ukraine in crypto

specifically um so if you haven't seen there were a ethereum address i think a usdc and a bitcoin address were made um so that anyone could donate to the ukraine and support um the people of ukraine support the troops etc and which one absolutely amazing super super cool that they're doing this um crypto has raised in less than a week the crypto community has raised more than 40 million dollars worth of crypto for ukraine which is unbelievably amazing um with the traditional financial system it's very difficult to do because again a lot of things are getting blocked sanctions etc but this is just easy anyone can do it there's

what 74 000 donors and this is only tracking ethereum based so this is ethan usdc it doesn't count the bitcoin i believe bitcoin there's another at least 5 000 maybe 10 or 5 million maybe 10 million dollars um being donated um so pretty incredible c but if you want to scroll down you can actually just see the charts like day to day um which is super cool and so this is all the activity that it's showing of everyone donating which is just super interesting is you can kind of just see it live in what's happening but uh pretty amazing to see the community contribute so much to uh to the ukraine it's incredible and the speed at which it's happening like the 75 000 individual unique donors in one

week is is it wouldn't have been possible in in any web 2 world or old banking system absolutely it's pretty cool and that's you know and that's and that's what we really need right like we need we need immediate support now we live in this world of immediacy right right and so the next chart we have is actually it's kind of funny so um ukraine announced i think it was like three days ago now that all of the donors are going to receive an nft and they were going to do a snapshot on march 3rd i believe at whatever time um and anyone who donated before that was going to give an nft um which is freaking awesome that a country was about to

um airdrop an nft to citizens all around the world like who would have thought that that's what's happening in 2022. and so when you look at this chart here this is the donations again by day and right after they announced that they were going to drop an nfc donations spiked by like i don't even know what is this 10x 20x every day i think it was around like 3 000 x yes it was like it was under 10 it was i think it was around 5 million at first then they announced the nft and it like quickly went to 40 million within like two days is absolutely insane which is hilarious how many people are trying to like nft um which i mean look we'll i won't even get into that but

like there's probably people that are like donating from multiple wallets so that they're going to get multiple entities et cetera um but anyway go to the go to the next one real quick because uh i woke up this morning and yeah what happened tell us tell us what happened all i see is everyone's saying that we got rugged by ukraine which is hilarious um so it's basically this is the i think the v the vice prime minister of ukraine just says after careful consideration we decided to cancel the air drop every day there are more and more people willing to help ukraine to fight back the aggression instead we will uh announce nfts to support ukraine armed forces soon we do not have any plans to issue any fungible tokens um so basically they went back on it uh but it was the greatest marketing play they

could have ever done because it basically 10x their uh their donations i mean look they have you know more important things to deal with than trying to airdrop people some nfts it would have been really cool uh but like if there's anyone that can rug nft project right now it's ukraine so go for it deal with what's going on don't worry about the nft uh but it's really funny to see how many people not funny to be honest it's actually kind of bad but how many people donated as a result of thinking they were going to get an nft uh kind of ridiculous but actually there's a lot of people speculating on why they backed out and what's what's interesting is a lot of people like you think it was the sec so the sec has been blocking people from getting air drops

uh in the u.s because um you know it's a security or whatever blah blah blah and so i i don't know that this would is it but this is just some people on twitter respecting that maybe it was the sec and gary gensler was it was the one that didn't allow everyone to get their nft uh ukraine airdrop but who knows right well we got we got ukraine dow up here tell us about this guy yeah so this um just shows the power of web3 i mean the last couple things what we talked about is more um you know the the benefit of the advantages of of crypto as a whole not i mean it's all web 3. um but web 3 we think of our like nfts and dows and you know social tokens etc are not necessarily just fighting inflation and and moving money

across borders that's the sort of old school um you know benefit and we've really moved into a lot of new capabilities of web three and um it's really interesting to see the web through community really step up here for ukraine and um quickly uh a dao was created once russia started to invade ukraine called ukraine dao and basically what this is is just a means of getting donations well so there's two things one they did an auction for an nft to collect funds for ukraine they also just did donations where you just donate to them and there's a big group in there who are um basically helping them figure out what to do with the funds and get it to the

right people and see what else they can do to help and now they're very well funded they've raised millions i'm not exactly sure how much it was um but it just shows how cool it is that in web 3 you can spin up a dow in literally minutes and then get millions of dollars in literally minutes um to support causes like this like where how that can't happen you know in in web 2 it's just not possible you can do um what's the the app and web too crowd funding uh is it called crowdfunding kickstarter or gofundme go find me right so i mean yes you can do that and it's somewhat similar but again it uses swift or it uses like the the old school financial system so there are issues um and as we saw in canada it

is centralized so meaning the government or gofundme can just shut it down if they want so they shut down 10 million dollars in canada for the the trucker convoy and so i'm assuming gofundme wouldn't do that for ukraine but you just you don't know right you don't know the power of other people and who they know and so this is why we want to get rid of the centralization because it's not if it happened to you it's can it happen to you um and so we're able to create this in minutes and be able to fund ukraine with no chance of it happening um and i think that's just a beautiful thing so kudos to those who set up the ukraine dao amazing amazing initiative and just i think one thing uh that a lot of people think about is when

they're giving money to you know somebody they don't know right uh there's obviously there's obviously that um that part of your brain that says hey like they're how do you know what they're gonna spend this money on what are they gonna use it for talk to us a little bit kai about uh why giving the money through crypto enables a different flow of the money going out on the other end and the way that blockchain allows us to see that right so there's actually a tweet on this coming up i believe that david hoffman um tweeted from uh from bankless and i think it's the third one over it might be one more over yeah and so what's interesting here that he the point that he brought up is

so crypto communities not the only one that's donating to ukraine there are others right the us there are other countries the european countries etcetera that are donating to ukraine however they have restrictions on what they're allowed to use that money for and they don't get all the money right away it either like gets streamed out and comes to them in phases they have restrictions on what they're allowed to buy so they can't use the money to buy weapons um and things to to fight back they can only use it for example to buy i think it's like humanitarian things now i'm assuming that means like food and things like that which is great i'm not saying there's anything wrong with that um but what's really cool about the the crypto aspect of it is they just got 40 million dollars in seven days and it's theirs and they can literally do

whatever they want with it right so if they need to buy weapons right they can go and buy weapons if they need to buy i don't know tanks they can go and buy i don't know if you can get a tank for 40 million but whatever it is that they need there's just no rules and they just they have the ability to do whatever it is that they need in that moment and i think that is extremely important right um because the us doesn't necessarily know everything that the ukraine that ukraine needs right now um those that are in it that are there they might need certain things and now they have the ability to do it um with the other ways that they're receiving money there's restrictions um and so yeah yeah and and and let's be clear here not that kyle and i are supporting

the purchase of of weapons or tanks uh i think that the the the the power here is putting responsibility in the hands of the people that are using and making these decisions right so this is a completely different basically global structure than the current structure we have where you have america as the dominant uh government and although that might be changing um they are they're inputting the way that they give money and the way that they support other countries comes with all

these political obligations right and comes with these things that as you mentioned doesn't necessarily allow you to do the things that you need i mean to in the past what what america has been known to do is actually only fund the war but not fund education or not fund local um local projects that actually need the support right right and so i think there's there's really this is just like it's like civic responsibility to a new level because you're allowing these people to make the decisions that that they need to make and then i think the other point here and this goes back to the ukraine dao is okay guys so a whole bunch of people donated to ukraine dow explain to us uh and

obviously i know you're not involved in ukraine dial but explain to us why it's interesting that it went to a dow with a multi-sig and how that simple governance structure changes how you would make decisions of what to do with that money right so what's interesting with the dow and again i don't know if they're actually doing it this way or if they're just donating that money they have to like the ukraine address um but what they could do is maybe they have others in a bunch of people in ukraine whether it's in different cities a part of this dao and now everyone can vote on how they're going to separate or use this treasury right you get some governance that can happen real time you don't have to set up like a ballot like the old school everyone come in and write your name down and prove who you

are with your id and blah blah blah but you can just you can have a vote uh inside the dow and distribute the the um the funds in whichever way you want um and so and you can do that in real time which i think is just so it's so cool um again i don't know if ukraine doubt did that um but i'm sure they're doing something with governance and i bet you they're gonna create other things and who knows what else they'll do um but yeah i think that's super cool it's i think it's truly incredible that you can with web3 and i just i love let's i'm just clicking back to the ukraine dao page their tagline is using the power of web3 tech and communities and community to raise funds for ukrainian organizations that are helping those suffering from the war in ukraine

uh and that first part using the power of web3 tekken community that's really that's what we're all about here at webthere academy and that's this potential of okay in a matter of you know a week basically you could start an organization you could raise funds you could have a vote as to how to allocate those funds and then you could allocate those funds and distribute those funds to organizations on the ground like right the the that is that it's mind-blowing it's truly really i love it also also i got to give a shout out to the fact that there's a little a funny aside and we should do a separate piece on this sometime kai is i just love that you can name your own token right so you know we have this we

have this whole branding exercise around naming tokens now um and so uh ukraine dao has named their token the love token which is which is amazing and maybe maybe sometime kyle what's what's your favorite token name oof that's a tough point to do right on the spot uh actually my favorite token is the bankless dow token because it's called bank because it's like you do some work and you're like oh i just made some bank and i don't know i love that i gotta go with uh with sweet love potion i gotta go with axey infinity's token it's smooth love potions smooth smooth excuse me excuse me smooth love potion that's true that's a good one

okay before we finish off on ukraine uh we got one more tweet up here tell us a little about andrew yang's tweet here yeah so this is really cool so um andrew andrew wang that's not andrew young is andrew wang who is i actually don't know exactly who he is but he's big in in the crypto space um he basically just tweeted and said you know how can we help um and um and i think it was what 32 after 32 hours after his tweet um they made a collection of nfts and they minted a million dollars in 30 seconds all of which went to helping people people of ukraine so um it's just another so this wasn't the dow this is actually separate from that right so

these guys were able to raise a million dollars by creating i think they had an artist that created a an nft or a collection of nfts and just immediately raised a million dollars in 30 seconds literally 32 hours after he just like posed the idea of is there anything we can do right so the timing and just like the speed of this stuff is just it's absolutely unbelievable um and i think one thing to note is like it's unfortunate that we are seeing all this and like bringing this to light because of what's happening in the world right now right um like it sucks that this is the conversation we have to be having this is actually happening in the real world right now um but it is nice to see that it all works and it can happen that quick and when

there's incentive to do these kind of things like people can band together this quick and crypto allows it to actually happen right the old structure doesn't and so it's just it's it's amazing to see again the web3 community come together get creative and just like whip up something and they're all different like this was an nft the other one was a dow the other way is just direct transfer um so it's just it's using all of the tools of web3 and they all worked and they all worked immediately so it's just it's it's incredible yeah i love uh i love a few things from this uh one in this tweet is the term the internet of value which i think is a great term for web3 right um the

[Music] that's that's the future that we're heading into is the internet of value and ownership um but the biggest thing here has got to be community and you know there's a big shout out here to the web3 community but really there's a shout out to the world right like look what we do when we face adversity and when we can come together uh it's it kind of goes back to your web three word of the week last week of hope right uh we're we're in this time when um unfortunately challenges and um things that are unpredictable seem to be at no end right and uh i think we are headed in a direction of more challenge

unfortunately uh because that's just where we're at in in our world but at the same time isn't it incredible that we've got this optimistic community that's just so prepared to jump in and innovate and to support uh you know it's uh it's a powerful thing absolutely i'm excited to uh you can pop over the next tabs but i'm excited to see these same ideas and things getting applied to businesses and to products and things that you know make the world a better place right um we're seeing it now happening with war but i'm excited to see it happen just all the time with many different things you know which is that's where this is going to lead to yeah and and also not only on the scale

uh i think one thing that we we often get caught up in uh is only thinking about the uh the big things and you know and uh the big names and the big brands that are using web3 but one thing that is so exciting is to think about uh a small community using web3 you know the community that we might never hear about that is doing some local fundraiser or is trying to figure out governance on a better level for their you know local uh basketball team or something like that right or basketball club or babysitter's club i think there's uh i get excited about those more micro communities and the impact that this will have for them okay next up um big an announcement from microsoft so microsoft which owns

minecraft which is one of the largest games in the world over 130 million monthly users uh kai you played minecraft before i've never been a minecraft player myself but i i don't think it was minecraft i used to game a little bit when i was younger and i think it was starcraft that i played i can't remember if it was in or warcraft i don't know command and conquer though was one that i played i loved that game i don't know that if i played minecraft though well minecraft is going web3 and so they're building on top of polygon and they're going to introduce nft worlds into the game uh and so when we talk about one of the big things that needs to happen here is the onboarding of

millions hundreds of millions billions of people onto web3 gaming is really going to be that on-ramp for a lot of people right so you know you've got 130 million gamers here who who whether or not they're in web 3 already who knows but they're going to have the opportunity to start collecting nfts and purchasing nfts and playing with them in the game and so i think that it's something common i talk a lot about is that gaming is actually the big thing that's going to onboard people onto web3 this year last year was nfts the year before that it was more crypto so it's exciting to see more and more people jumping on board absolutely big things coming out of the gaming sector let's switch over to uh a different

topic let's talk about advertising in web3 kai i've got a uh a photo of a thread from our web3 academy discord up here what's going on here yeah so this is inside our web through academy discord we it's a bunch of entrepreneurs creators and marketers and basically we're just shooting and trying to learn web3 right we're asking questions and we're learning and we we often create threads where kind of everyone can come in and and ask questions and give feedback and and we can learn more about we had a question um about advertising in web3 um it's a little small for me to read but let's see if i can let's see if i can read this out here um what are so it was tagged at me actually and it was uh what are the

actual guidelines if any when going about advertising um the collection from a legal point of view so basically asking about what if what if i want to advertise about an nft or advertise about um you know crypto or anything to do with web3 um what are the rules are we allowed to do that kind of stuff and so um i felt fairly qualified to answer this question because we've been running a marketing agency for a number of years now uh helping a lot of the crypto newsletters and crypto media companies um advertise on social media and you know it's been a it's a bit of a pain to be honest because again centralized organizations they get to choose and do whatever the hell they want to do uh for a while there we weren't allowed to run any ads if you

said crypto in an ad if you said defy like it just wouldn't get approved on facebook on google on youtube etc um over the last year uh they they finally opened things up and they said so long as you're just educating you can run ads what you can't do is one if you're in exchange you have to apply and get like uh um approved to to run ads but if you're trying to sell a token or an nf like an nft or a crypto like an ico or whatever you're not allowed to run ads directly to like an asset right you are allowed to run ads if it's industry news if it's education so like let's say newsletters media companies um just talking about web3 that's fine um so those are kind of

the the rules if you have an nft project for example you can't run it directly to like i don't know the openc page just buy it and say buy this asset you can't do that but you could run an ad to maybe your discord and you know um frame it as like join our community about x and then in your discord you can then sell the nft but you can't run the ad directly to it um so that's a key point uh the other thing you can't do if you're gonna run ads for um anything in this isn't even just crypto but this is anything in general you're not allowed to um basically uh suggest that people can make money okay and that's tough in crypto and web3 because everything is you just call it

the internet of value everything is is money or is value or is an asset um but so you just got to be careful about how you frame it and kind of the way that you um the way that you write your copy the other thing here is like even with those policies they still like every ad we launch for any of our clients it gets rejected and then we just have to review it one by one and then they usually get approved one of the areas they've really cracked down on and i don't really know why is using the word defy so you got to be kind of careful there nft seems to be fine metaverse things like that seem to be okay um they get a little bit it gets tough if you like mention your token if you have a token let's say you have a dao

and you want to grow your dao or your nft membership base if you use the name for it especially if it's popular they often get rejected um so as long as you're not using the names you're more talking about like community or education things like that you should be fine now you can use the word crypto on that and it seems to be fine it just kind of depends on the context i think and kai other than well we're talking about sort of the tactics and opportunities for a web 3 project to think about okay how do i advertise and market and build my community um what what other platforms would you suggest that they consider using um any other tools or tactics you would share with somebody who's got a

web 3 project going on yeah good question so facebook instagram and youtube are kind of the like um the best performing platforms for ads so that's that's why i discuss those ones google search ads as well also very very good of course um the other ones you can go to is something like twitter uh the problem with twitter is their tracking kind of sucks on off site conversions so it's kind of difficult so like we use it we just don't use it as much as i'd like to use it because almost all of web3 people are on there um the other one you can use is brave so brave is like google chrome but it's i don't want to say it's web3 because it's not it's more like web two and a half web 2.75 it's it's basically google chrome but it cares about your data and so it has

privacy it doesn't collect all your data it doesn't know who you are it has built-in crypto wallets um and what's really cool about brave is you can run ads but they're notification ads so like a notification pops up on the side of your browser and it says like hey join this newsletter we talk about x if you click on it you actually get paid in their native token bat so they share their um uh their ad revenue with their users and if you want you can just turn off ads and you can you'll never get paid but you'll never ever see an ad or you can turn it on so that you can earn money um which i think is super super cool i think this is the future of where advertising is going to go where it doesn't go direct to platform it goes

maybe some to platform but most to the users um if they share data and i feel like there's going to be a marketplace here of data where like people are going to be able to set limits of i only want to see ads if they're willing to pay me at least this much uh and things like that and you'll start to like barter it and i don't know it's going to be really cool to see where this goes but i think data is going to become a revenue stream for everybody and so i always think i always call it like there's universal basic income i don't think that's where it's going to go that we're not going to need that from governments it's going to be like universal data income and just like as you use the internet you can just sell some of your data because honestly most

people don't really care if their data is being shown uh it just i mean we all do it we all are using google and facebook and our data is getting used so why not make a bit of money while you do it so anyway brave is a good one for ads uh what else twitter brave honestly uh tick tock doesn't allow you to do ads if you mention anything about crypto that which is insane because they launch nfts on ethereum but they won't let you run ads about fts or crypto uh so that's that's very odd uh reddit is the other one but honestly the results on reddit are just this is nothing compared to facebook and that so i wouldn't i wouldn't recommend it and i think the other reason why brave

is such a great spot uh is that's where the web3 audience is right anybody who's using the brave browser is crypto friendly so you're more likely it depends on what kind of project you're you're playing with but if your project is looking for a target audience that is a crypto user already then brave is is a great place to find those the one negative of brave is that you do need a larger spend because they are a campaign based uh spend versus a uh spend per day dollar amount uh so just something to know um but yeah that's great stuff thanks for sharing that kai um okay so that's uh that's our our sort of our news of the week

let's let's switch over um oh actually no sorry there's one more news item and then i'm gonna switch over this is my lead in uh so um got a news item here from about coinbase nft so coinbase nft launched a wait list and this actually came out a week ago this uh tweet so i'm sure the number has grown a lot since then but i'm basically showing a graph that says that coinbase nft has had 33.7 million signups and that's just on a wait list there isn't even the ability to use it yet that's just people getting excited and currently there's about a million just over a million

open c traders all time so that means that we've got about a million people that have bought and sold nfts and there's already 3.7 million that are waiting to get on another platform to buy uh so it's just really it's it's you know it's the the graph is going off the charts right now in terms of the number of users that are coming into the space and looking to participate and wait until you have minecraft and other big games launch their nfts and now all of a sudden you have billions of people using nfts and they don't even like the cool thing about gaming for example is like they're just playing a game and

they're like oh i want that skin on my avatar and they're just going to buy it they're not even going to really like it's not going to be this choppy weird experience of like i got to sign up for you know open like for my get my metamask wallet go over to openc and like try to buy this thing in an auction it's just like it'll be seamless inside the game so it's like it'll be onboarded to web3 they won't even really know and i wonder how coinbase is going to do this because they originally were supposed to launch in december and like what are we at now march 3rd and they still haven't launched um so i don't know what the heck they're doing but i assume it's going to make uh they're going to do it in a way where it's a very

user-friendly experience i hope um and they have the ability that because they have like i don't know 100 million or something maybe more than that might be like 200 million users on coinbase the app right and i'm sure they'll find a way to integrate just like using the app that they have which is centralized but they'll be able to find a way to use that to buy instead of having to move your money to like a metamask and then use it so we'll see what they do i know that they're launching on ethereum i know they're also actually i don't know that they're going on immutable x yet which is layer two but i thought i saw it somewhere but don't quote me on that um and i don't know where else they're gonna do it yet but we'll see but um yeah i can't wait we'll

see it might be a top top signal for nfts but uh we'll see what happens yeah and and not only you know it's i think one thing that we try to focus on on this podcast is you know we're not we're not we will give you signals because of the news that we're talking about but we're not necessarily looking to give you uh the the edge to make the most money in crypto right um the the reason that this is so interesting is because the users are there they're already there but there's more users coming on board and what do we look for when we're starting a business or starting a project or building out a new campaign when we look where our audience is right that's one of the first steps and

the fact that there's enough becoming more and more growth in the nft audience means that it just opens up way more access to the average person because we're again we don't want the last thing we want is for web 3 to become this 10 of the world uses it and it's only the whales and it becomes you know inaccessible to everybody we want the whole world to be using this because this is a solution to bigger problems here right uh okay so go ahead cut yeah this is a great transition into our nft of the week because i want to be clear uh right now i think this is kind of why we're doing this entity of the week right now i feel

like the nft space is this sort of speculative bubble and there's a bunch of people just trading and flipping jpegs and they've no idea what these things do and they're just it's it's honestly a bit pathetic in my mind i think 95 at least 99 of what's gone on in the last few months are going to zero i can almost guarantee that similar to what happened with the ico boom in the dot-com bubble back in 2000. that's not to say i think nfts are worthless i think nfts provide some of the coolest and best utility that this world is going to see it's going to change the internet and how we do business i just think a lot of people aren't doing that it's just a lot of people that are just making some images and just trying to get rich and that's cool whatever it's created

some hype it's got a lot of people in the space so we need that um i just don't give a about that i've never traded any nfts i've bought a few because i like them and i want to use them because they have utility but that's it so one of the reasons we started web 3 academy was to get that noise out of here and instead go how can we actually use nfts to start businesses to transform business models to engage communities et cetera and like use it for a good purpose right create real utility out of these things um and so that's why we started the nft um of the week because we want to start highlighting these uh oftentimes these things don't get highlighted in the in the news you know you get like people sells one for 69 million that's

all over the news but you don't get the one where it's like i built a business using this nft and everyone's getting all this value you don't really see that anywhere so we want to try to bring those things to light because i think that's what helps all of us learn and you know come up with ideas for what we can do with our own business um so the first one uh nft of the was it month not week uh the first nft of the month is uh is actually from um bakery i believe it's called bakery dao is what they've called it so uh bakery okay so there's um there's i think it's two people but there might be more but they're anonymous on twitter one is called pastry the other one is called croissant and uh i love the web free space um but

so basically uh these guys have like dove deep into uh ethereum in the crypto uh web3 space and um they they wanted to create a newsletter where they could share more information um but they didn't want to sell it the old school web 2 way of like sign up for a membership and just i'll tack it off your credit card they wanted to like show how web 3 can really work um and so they started bakery dow and the way you get into this dow is through the purchase of nfts and there's two um so if you want to scroll down a little bit they're actually talking about the same sort of thing i did of kind of the exact going on in the nft space but if you scroll down a little bit more we can see the two nfts it's go down to

this take a picture of a croissant you'll see yeah um and yeah so they have two different levels so basically it's a newsletter think of it that way but it's actually a bunch of different things um and they have one that is like a vip nfc i think there's 20 300 or something of them and it gives you exclusive access it's like um unlimited for like the time that this nft works for and you basically get everything in their entire dow and their entire newsletter then they have like an unlimited supply of kind of a lower level one which is cheaper and it expires every 30 days you have to keep buying it and it gives you some limited access inside of their their world now what's really really cool about this is they use the protocol called unlock

protocol i talk about it a lot because i think it's one of the coolest web 3 protocols and i'm probably going to make it i feel like it's going to be our web 3 tool of the tool of the month as well but i actually spoke with them today i think they're coming on the podcast soon so we'll get you guys a nice breakdown of what this is but basically what they're doing is they've they've built in this um protocol that can take an nft and you can build in locks into it or like gated access and it integrates with almost every platform on the internet so if you have a wordpress site if you use discord if you i don't if you scroll up there's actually an image that shows a bunch of their different integrations but this bakery dow they have like eight different um

eight different platforms that they're using so they use discord they use wordpress they use shopify they have like a newsletter i think it's youtube is what i see on here and then there's like a chat place and i don't know what else there was a bunch of different things where you can basically consume different forms of content in web 2 there's no way to integrate everything together where one person can get access to certain things based off of the subscription they have very very difficult to do in a membership model you can do it on wordpress with all the things but only that's on wordpress you can't really do it with much else sometimes you can get zapier to like integrate things but it's a it's a bit complicated and it's just it's not perfect what these guys have done is used an nft

where once you purchase it you just connect your wallet to any of these eight different platforms they have in their newsletter and boom all of a sudden their content appears and if you have the other nft the more expensive one the more exclusive one then boom it opens up even more channels for you if you have nothing um then when you open it up you won't see anything on the website so it's all integrated through an nft super super super cool the other really cool thing they did is the vip nfts are the ones that are part of the dow and the unlimited nfts the revenue that they make from that they're sharing with those that hold the vip nfts and so what's amazing it's these two guys make this newsletter right in this

community but all of a sudden they onboard you know i don't know if they have the 2000 sold yet but they onboard let's say 2 000 people to the vip one and now they have 2 000 people part of their marketing army or their pr army or their sales army or their developer army or their writer army that all are incentivized to work with them not for them but with them because they all are going to generate revenue into the treasury of this dow or into the hands of the holders of the the vip nft so like it's just web3 just makes it now look the i've gone through the process of buying it i i signed up for the newsletter it is clunky right now and even unlock protocol so that when i talked to him today it's not the easiest thing in the world yet to like get it

into your wallet and make sure it all connects but like whatever right we're in 1998 of the internet let's call it of what three right now um but either way it already had i mean the coolest thing was that it gave me access to all these different platforms there's just no way to do that in web 2 and we as a marketing agency have a bunch of clients who run memberships and this is one of our biggest problems is we want to make sure that people who are in the community are ones that are still paying and we can't do that if we go to another platform so um yeah really really cool um and just i love it so this is my this is my nft of the month jay what are your thoughts yeah i think it's it's super exciting to see

an nft project that is not a profile picture project right like this is a croissant you could put it as your profile if you really want to well you know and they say that they say that here right like you still you still get a jpeg it's not like you know but but this the the value of this nft is in the utility of it yes and that's that's the big leap that i really i really want to see more businesses make and that i think we're so excited about and why we want to be educating people is because i think a lot of people just think nft they think jpeg right and that's that's the extent of it right now but there's so much more and this is why we call it

web3 tools right yeah this is a tool that makes the integration of their business in all of the properties of the business so much better it's also a tool to organize and onboard people into their dow to help them build their business it is literally just a tool now it's sweet if a tool isn't a hammer and instead it's this like cool picture that you could also use as your twitter profile is both right the problem is is the people that are just making entities that are just the picture right like other than like crypto punks and 40. clubs and yes there are going to be some that stick around because they end up building a good community and they build things from it and their creates utility or membership whatever but this is what i mean of like our nft is in this big bubble and i

think that most of them go to zero because i think what happens is once all the hype of these profile pictures just leaves well all those just go but you know what doesn't go this the bakery does stays so long as they're still writing a newsletter right there's a legit product with real utility and the only way you get that product and that value is if you buy this nft so it doesn't matter what the markets are doing they don't care if there's a speculative bubble or not all they care is do people want to learn about whatever their newsletter is so they just they incorporate entities in their business and i love it and that's the way i want to see nfts go moving forward yeah and we're going to have to get uh bakery dow on the podcast so they can

really break this down because i do think it is an incredible uh case study or use case for anybody else that basically has a membership based business right if you have a membership business uh you should be looking into unlock protocol as kai said we're going to get them on the podcast in the future uh there is real potential to be using that your nft as your membership access and then grow the utility as well like that's the other thing i think i get really excited for and i just love that bakery dow broke it down into two sides right they have the unlimited supply nft which controls price by having an unlimited supply that means that that nft will not change price it's not about a investment it's

just about access and then they have the vip level which as you said is a limited supply there is the opportunity for an investment there but then there's also the additional access as well so you know think about nfts not just as an investment in a piece of art think about nfts also as one of the big utilities for them right now is access and how can you in your business okay i could control access with an nft what does that look like really exciting use case hell's yeah good job bakery down keep baking keep cooking those things [Laughter] uh all right well that's it for the weekly roll up uh this week uh thanks so

much for tuning in thanks to uh members tuning in in discord uh love seeing you guys in the in the channels uh and chatting um thanks to everybody else out there listening uh would love to see you guys um join the web3 academy discord uh or also would just love to chat if anybody has any questions hit up me or kai on twitter we are all about learning and sharing right now and we're we're at your service we also are going to um make sure to join the discord and if you know of any cool dowels cool nfts cool web3 tools let us know i think we're going to start running some polls or ways that people can like throw all their ideas in because look i know this one because i'm

a customer of them and i've used it and i'm a fan of this but i'm sure there's so many other nfts or dows and things that are creating real world value that we don't know of and so we really want the community here to help us so either i don't know find us on twitter and tweet at us to let us know join the discord and make sure you let us know there whatever find a way to communicate with us we want to share more things like this more real real world utility all right have a great week everybody thanks for tuning in and we'll catch you next time i'll see ya thank you for listening to web3 academy we hope this helps you along your web3 journey if it does please share this episode and subscribe so you don't miss

the next one by the way if you have yet to join the discord community you are missing out this is where all the magic happens this is where we learn where we ask questions where we network uh you want to be in there the link to join is in the description below and finally a quick disclaimer nothing in this podcast was financial advice crypto and web 3 can be risky you can literally lose it all in fact if you invest on account of what we say you probably will lose it all so don't do that in all honesty the point of this podcast is to remove the noise of markets and price and focus on utility implementation anyway so you should not take any of this as financial advice thank you friends and see you in the next one
