ENS Talks · 2024 · 7:56
Moritz Boullenger, co-founder of Fluidkey, gives a lightning talk at frENSday 2024 on user-friendly privacy on public chains with ENS. The talk is about making privacy practical for people who transact on public blockchains, using ENS names as part of the approach.

L me okay perfect so um if you were at the talk just before from Jesse um I think he talked about one of the big problems to solve with identity is privacy right like sometimes you want to share what you're you know owning sometimes we don't want that to be public right and so that's the problem we've been tackling with fluid key over the past year um and we actually think NS is a really big uh um yeah actually component to to make to more privates and uh I'll show you today how how that looks and how we're making that happen so before going into it this um just a question to the room how many of
you have more than five ethereum accounts 10 okay pretty much everyone right and so there's different reasons to create those accounts um one reason is just privacy and segregating things and not having everything tied to one address and so that was also my case for a really long time and um you know it gets really difficult to manage of more and more addresses never less addresses right and so um that's also one of the big problems we wanted to solve with fluid key and then on the other side the problem we wanted to solve is that you don't want to have just one address with an ens and basically all of your activity over the past few years connected together maybe you want to show your nfts and different other things but there's also things you
just don't want to publicly and so that's what we've been trying to you know make happen with fluid key and so demo how that looks today and and how fluid key works um so in a very simple way what fluid key does is it gives you an ens like this so this is my enss here fy. and so if you sign up to fluid key You' get also an ens um with an ft. uh domain and and that ens has one particularity instead of um basically resolving the same address every time you query it it resolves a new address every time you query it so if I now refresh this page here you can see it resolve 0 x69 if I refresh this page over here um
what you'll see is that that address is changing and so every time someone puts this address in the wallet puts this address anywhere they basically um you know resolve a new address that only the the recipient so so me in this case can you know access with their spending keys so it's still fully self custodial um and that's the power steal addresses especially connected with an ens that still gives you a static identifier that you can just you know use it with um and then on the other side inside of fluid key all of these you know transactions are aggregated so you don't you know have to manage like hundreds of addresses separately but you basically see all of your balances in one place um but then you know I received one usdc
this morning um if I look at it on chain and look at this address you will basically see that there's only one usdc in this address over here and you know I could have 100,000 usdc in this account or 100 usdc in this account you would know from basically the activity on Shain so that's really the power of uh using fluid key for privacy with uh with enss let me go back in here and so you basically get something like this right so now you have an enss so everybody can still send you money very easily you just share your sameit with everybody um but you have segregated accounts that um you can manage separately and kind of very
easily move things around with um without connecting everything so that's the unlock um you can now generate self custodial accounts that are not publicly link to users main accounts and all from one simple ens you don't have to ask anyone you can basically just you know query that DNS and get somebody else's address and know they can spend that money or spend these assets whenever they want to all right let me finish here by also just you know again kind of I think highlighting the Simplicity of this right because the end user experience is really simple you just type in the enss and you send money and it arrives on the user's accounts behind the scenes there's a lot of things happening right so um the wallet basically queries the
ens resolver which then queries fluid key which generates the self address um which you know returns it to fluid key then the wallet verifies the response on chain to make sure that's actually you know a valid response and then you get um basically an address that you can send funds to from the wallet and so that's the yeah the power really of of using Ems for privacy and and why we're really excited about what we're building um with fluid key and uh yeah if you want to try it out feel free of course happy to also answer any questions now and uh yeah if you can give us a follow as well um always great to keep you updated yes [Applause]
two quick questions one uh so things are going to these different addresses how do I handle gas if I want to send things out do you have a way of paying gas all of these addresses are actually um smart accounts so they save smart accounts and so we sponsor gas so you pay usdc and we pay e any other token yeah uh second question are the new addresses generated deterministically uh yeah they they're generated sud sudo randomly so like to an external person you know they wouldn't be able to tie them together but they are generated deterministically which which enables you to you know be certain that if FL key disappears tomorrow you can basically regenerate all of these addresses and basically access your funds without us so you know
you're never entit to fluid key having to generate these addresses how if you disappeared how would a person go about doing that yeah so um there are I think two um two open source um recovery kits that have been built one by Deon I think um in this room um and and uh so you can find one at recovery. fluid key.com um and there's also link to the repo and so on and so forth so it's all on GitHub as well and so you can just use that basically scan through all these addresses it's not as user friendly as you know just using fluid key but you know if you need to recover fund that they do the job great just so I understand another person could use that on someone else's wallets could they do
that to like link wallet is that possible no it's only you can only use that recovery um kit and cover these addresses if you have access to the spending key so to to your spending key sense do you see this as a long-term solution to the problem and how do you see the product evolving over time yeah that's a really good question I think as long as there are like public chains I think this is going to be an important part of of the the solution because the nice thing is these addresses these accounts are literally just like any other ethereum account so you can send funds with it but you can also interact with smart contracts you can do pretty
much anything you want with these addresses right um and a lot of other privacy Protocols are basically kind of more locking you into another protocol where then your counterparty also has to be in that protocol and you can send money maybe there in a more private way and so on and so forth I think in the future this in combination with something like privacy pools might be super interesting because then you can also bring traceability as well as having this unlinkability that stuff addresses bring um so you know with fluid key we're not like building just like a self address protocol we really we really care about giving users very simple ways to have privacy and public chains on across ebm chains and so that's really the goal of yeah all right any more questions for
meritz all right we'll give it up onek [Applause]
