SOTS #16: Announcing the EthStaker Helpdesk for Eth2 Genesis

hey there superfizz here it's uh november 29th 2020 and this is my state of the stake today i want to talk about the eath staker help desk uh so it began the other day when i was installing my validator client and i have installed validator clients a hundred times i've tested them all i've used them all um and while i may not know everything about all of them i i know how to install one but when it came time to do my actual livenet deposit mainnet deposit i um didn't enter the passphrase for or actually i mistakenly copied and pasted the passphrase for

my validator and when i started my process the validator didn't come up and now if this was test if this was a test net i wouldn't care i'd be like oh well let me go look and see what i did wrong and go fix it but because it's mainnet and there's a lot on the line i panicked i felt my blood pressure going up i could hear my uh my heart pumping in my ears and my the back of my head started itching like i was stressed out and it helps me realize that for a lot of people even if you have a good idea what you're doing if you run into something it can be really stressful and i know i could have contacted someone for help

but really i was just able to calm down and resolve the problem and everything was fine but not everyone knows where they can go to get help especially if they're panicking and so that's kind of the idea behind the eat staker help desk the idea is for 12 hours before mainnet launch and 12 hours after mainnet launch we'll have dedicated people who can respond in pairs of two to kind of go into a private room and help you solve whatever problems you can you have with whatever you need to do to get online and so maybe um your eth1 client didn't sync

well they can help you switch over to one of the providers from openetherium.com to get you a data feed so that you can get up and validating um maybe you're having trouble with your key management maybe you're trying to compile from source and something won't compile that's okay so if you come to us at reddit.com r eatstaker uh if you look at look for us on twitter.com eatstaker or if you come to our discord at invite.ggslash eat staker will be ready to recognize that you have a problem say hey i need the help desk and we will quickly connect you with people in a private room where you can

get your problems solved and now normally i don't encourage um private support for these problems and the reason for that is it's easy for someone to give you misinformation in private that they couldn't do in public and that's sort of the reason that i plan to pair up to support people for one health person because when you're stressed you may not want public support you don't want to sift through a hundred messages to find the one that's going to give you support what you really want is someone that you can give your anxieties to and they can help you resolve your problem so that's one of the things we're doing to help the beacon chain launch smoothly in order for that to work we need

support staff to come and volunteer for us i've posted uh on my my personal twitter uh twitter.comsuperfiz and in the on our reddit and in our discord if you'll find that form and just sign up if you are someone who can provide help uh to someone who's in crisis at that moment um i'm also thinking of like people who didn't think it all the way through maybe you waited until black friday to buy hardware and it's just being shipped and it's really not going to be ready for december 1st but maybe it'll be ready december 3rd or 4th we really want to do everything we can to have every validator online during genesis and now part of that is

to help you sure we want you to do well but it's not all altruistic in order for the network to thrive validators need to be online and so you might say well it's no big deal i'm gonna lose a dollar or two for being offline for a day but from the perspective of the network what if you are the first proposer or the second block proposer uh that means that there are 10 000 people watching this network genesis and because you sacrificed one dollar of of reward we're going to have a missed slot and that's kind of discouraging to everyone so that is the reason we'd love to get everyone up online

doesn't matter who you are doesn't matter if you're one validator or a hundred we want to support you for being mainnet launch ready december 1st at 12 o'clock p.m utc um yeah so feel free to reach out to us don't the moment you feel your blood pressure going up it's okay to come and say hey can i get a help desk partner uh don't wait until you're frustrated and there's nothing at all wrong with having a little extra help and i feel like our staff will do a great job of plugging people in we do need like i said those staff volunteers if you will hop onto

that form i know that there are a thousand people who know a lot about installing any of the given clients with that said i'm still encouraging people who are just setting up a client now to check out nimbus i'm going to keep encouraging nimbus until it is recognized as kind of an equal shareholder and so the benefit to the network is that if there's a client fault using the least popular client and currently that's nimbus will give you could give you a bit of an advantage so it'll work in your favor so anyway thanks this is superfiz and i hope you enjoy staking bye
