SOTS #12: Time to install beacon chain clients!

State of the Stake · November 2020 · 6:42

Superphiz urges prospective validators to install a beacon-chain client after four major clients released mainnet-ready candidates, but cautions that the launch software could still change. He recommends external validator alerts, close attention to updates around launch, and an Eth1 data feed, preferably from a local client rather than a third-party provider. He argues that client diversity improves resilience if a popular option fails, and warns that running the same validator keys in two places will lead to slashing. For people considering staking pools, he recommends waiting while a due-diligence group works toward safety ratings and standardized comparison data; its raw data was then expected within a week or two.

hey there super fizz from eatstaker here um i'm trying a new setup today and i discovered the sound is not the best so i'm going to keep running for running with it uh so yeah super fizz from the east staker network you can find us on reddit.com slash r e staker on discord at invite dot gg eastaker or on our twitter at uh twitter eatstaker so we're a group of community enthusiasts who work to be friendly first and knowledgeable second to help other stakers develop a robust staking setup and to

make friendships and encourage each other along the way so i'm glad you're here i hope you'll join us so today is a big day today is the day that i'm going to encourage you to install your beacon chain client if you haven't done that yet all four of the main clients being teku lighthouse nimbus and prism have released main net ready candidates and so that means you can go ahead and install them and everything should work fine there are a couple of caveats the first thing is i think it's really important for you to set up alerts that means you should join the discord for whatever group um whatever client you're staking with

you should set up email alerts if they have them available you should go to your preferred beacon chain explorer there are two really beacon chain cha.in and beaconscan.com and set up email alerts on both of those to let you know if your validator is down or not running and so this way you're getting a lot of outside feedback about if you need to do something to take care of your node on top of that keep your eyes peeled for new releases so we think that everything is frozen and we feel pretty confident that what we have now will be the main net launch software but anything can change between now and then

so keep your eyes peeled for up for software updates um and especially the week after really the day and the week after launch that you are looking out for software updates and applying them as quickly as possible you also need to make sure you have an eth1 data feed prepared so if you look at ethereumnodes.com you can find third-party data feeds uh those are like alchemy and alchemy and infuria while i don't really recommend those we don't consider them best practices press practice because they're third party providers that doesn't mean it's not going to work for some people you have to do what's right for you

so i really encourage you to choose a local eth1 client my preferred client is guess but don't forget about open ethereum bay su nethermind they are working eth1 clients that you should consider if nothing else then to be different than other people so one of the one of the things that makes this this network robust is people who don't look like others so let's say that i'm using the most popular eth1 client and it goes down then i won't be validating but someone who's using something um less popular may continue validating so

it's important that you don't look like other people the launch of this network is going to be december 1st at 12 p.m uh universal time for me that's 6 a.m central time um the east staker community call will begin 30 minutes before that so that's 5 30 a.m central time and we'll have a bunch of guests uh a bunch of people who have been a part of the development i don't like to jump the gun and tell you who might be there because i feel like that's setting up some false expectations but if you look back at our historical test net lunch calls or if you've participated in those then you know that there's likely to be a lot of participation from uh developers and implementers and just

people who know a lot about the ethereum world so i hope you can join us the one last thing that i always want to tell people also let me tell you two things um if you're new to all of this and you're just catching up i want you to remember that it's a very poor choice to run your validator keys in two places so if you run your validator keys on two computers maybe two at your home or maybe one at home and one on the cloud if you run those validator keys in two places you're going to get slashed so just keep that in the front of your mind and share with anybody that needs to know the last thing i'd like to bring up today is the progress of the ethereum due diligence committee and so the ethereum due diligence committee is a group of

people mostly experts in the field who are uh helping us to evaluate uh staking services and at some point to provide a safety rating for those services and so if you are a home user and you're ready to join a pool i've encouraged you to wait i hope you'll continue to wait stay putting your funds at risk right now is not worth the benefit but based on our meeting with the edc today they expect to begin rolling out kind of raw data in the next week or two and while we won't update this site with evaluations there will be

a standardized form of data that all of these pools have completed so that we can compare apples to apples and that's something that will be available on the the ethereum due diligence committee github and that will be linked from er ether. sorry ddc.org if it's not linked already it will be linked soon so this is a really exciting time i'm gonna keep giving you updates every day because a lot is changing but it's really exciting and i'm glad you're on the right the road with us as i've said before i don't like promoting these videos but i do feel like they're useful so it's helpful if you subscribe i don't want to say that

it's helpful if you set up alerts do it anyway i don't care it doesn't matter to me if you subscribe but i do want to be able to share important information with the community and this seems like a great way to do that so thanks your time superfiz out
