Open Conversations: Building the Digital Backbone for Earth's Future (Alan Ransil)
Funding the Commons Open Conversations · 2:55
Content addressing lets data be retrieved from anywhere by its digital fingerprint and checked against corruption or tampering, and Alan Ransil argues that applying these web3 data tools to science makes results easier to reproduce and understand. He describes how messy the path from raw lab data to a published result is, and presents his company's product as a global operating system for science that links research data to the real-world impact of carbon and biodiversity projects. He closes with remarks on the Funding the Commons event in Bangkok.

in web 3 because we can't address everything we are looking for the digital fingerprint of that resource if you use a Content address to go and try to retrieve some data you can not only retrieve it no matter where it is in the world because you're looking for a resource with this digital fingerprint but you can also make sure that that data wasn't corrupted or tampered with so by taking these web 3 data management tools and applying them to science we're going to make it easier to reproduce and understand scientific results and also easier for those results to ultimately have impact in the real world my name is Alan ransell I'm a co-founder of devonian we build a product called chy that's a global operating system for science we're
taking a lot of the tools that we've developed in web 3 and applying them to help people understand problems associated with carbon problems associated with biodiversity and really address those problems in ways where the data is interconnected from scientific research all the way to the impact that these organizations are having the scientific process is messy people gather data by physically writing it out in a lab notebook they gather data on computers in their lab they take visual data from things like microscopes or electron microscopes and data from spectrometers all these different places and the process of going from that raw data to a final scientific result is
often kind of messy the result of that is if you take a scientific paper and you're trying to reproduce those results if you're really trying to understand what is the basis for this finding it's often very difficult to reconstruct that entire analysis in decentralized science or dii part of what we're trying to do is use weed 3 data management tools to fix that problem the energy Earth comons and funding the commons has really been electric we really hoped that when we brought the sustain the blockchain summit which became Earth Commons into funding the commons that it would grow to become something greater than the sum of its parts and we're really seeing that in Bangkok that people are bringing
their experiences their projects their interests and we're able to get this the sort of broader lens on the notion of a Commons it feels like we're really building this consensus around the value of different types of Commons that people manage both ecological and ecological and building the momentum behind a movement that can preserve these comments for future Generations if you have a project that touches on nature Tech or carbon we'd love to talk to you about how we could work together
