Lightning Talk: Anna Kaplan (Zcash Foundation) & Marek Kotewicz (Parity)

29 Mar 2019 · 9:22

A pair of lightning talks recorded at the Zero Knowledge Summit in Berlin in March 2019, featuring Anna Kaplan of the Zcash Foundation and Marek Kotewicz of Parity Technologies. The short session touches on Zcash's zero-knowledge shielded transactions and privacy-preserving cryptography, alongside Parity's work on Ethereum client software and blockchain tooling.

so we are here to give you like quick overview and like what is happening right now regarding the cache and as a cache implementation that's on the road so there is a right now in development a ZK Shrestha limitation done by parity here in Berlin like not actually here in Berlin but located here in Berlin so last autumn parity and dizzy Keshe Foundation a partnered to give an implementation and rust this is a fork of the parity Pitkin code and we are using the Ross cryptographic libraries from the electric car company so before there's a huge company all right so maybe I'll tell a bit about the

calls so currently see cache there's a single presentation of Ziggy's protocol and as many of you know if the implementation is if there's just a single implementation basically the specification of a protocol very often reflects all the Box may be like in this implementation it was the case for Bitcoin so there like many bugs in there interpreter or the other parts of the code base that other implementations of beacon had to replicate in the future so basically this new implementation will give like the cash from the cash foundation secret ecosystem solving the deuterium had from day one so basically it was separate implementation from a

specification so have multiple clients so yeah this is a second point I provided specific bugs so we base our Sukesh implementation of on top of parity bit going code base so party Bitcoin it's not well known project so at parity we there was like a group of Chinese miners it reached out to us like when I think 2016 who asked us to implement like an independent no the implementation between on implementation from scratch and we did that and 2016 and early 2017 but since then this this implementation

hasn't got much traction I was used by several smaller smaller projects and we only implemented the features that were required like by those projects but it's not like for the features well optimized implementation but right now we are hoping that with with the Sukesh implementation we could actually with the dickish fork we can actually take this implementation to the next levels or implement many many optimizations in there in which and the bitcoin implementation and the dickish implementer of implementation will benefit from those optimizations that will implement for z cash yeah and the last point is a possibility to for polka dots with C cash bridge so basically at

parity like our priority number one right now is substrates that was just the framework for building block chains and polka dot which is a project to connect those blocks together and eventually we would like to also build bridge between Z cash client and polka dot client so this implementation will be yeah just the most critical part of this of this of this project yeah I think in general this quote from Josh from the foundation actually captures it quite well who said that an independent node implementation provides more options for the Turkish miners and users

which promotes healthy to centralization of the cryptocurrency protocols it matures and does this exactly what does he catch foundation once from this implementation we just want does the cash community to grow and have different options and not only one um so where can we find this implementation it's on github and you can have a look and baled it and run a node if you're interested right now what we are doing is it's still in development progress but we are good we're optimizing and testing so if you wanna run and like find some cool warnings or anything let us know and we can also give you an overview so what we

still are doing is we're benchmarking and we're testing optimizing seeing how things are going the other thing is always that documentation is always nice this is not you're not there yet and of course that's what we are all telling you about this we want people to like use it for now like for test reasons and also like for you to spread the world I think this is cool base is also very good for Russ beginners because it's relatively small compared to other like crypto projects mostly because of lack of those features that we we we just haven't implemented yet so there's like therapy CES was very basic and like there's not that many

optimizations so if you just wants to get some hands-on on Russ like just yeah I think it's a good Reaper to look at and if you don't understand something just create an issue and get happened there'll be someone answering and helping you out um so that's it from us and if you want to contribute here's the rapper can contact us on Twitter as well if you have any questions and yeah we'll take questions if you want if we have time is it reference compliant yet cannot sink like to the head of Zika stream is it reference compliant yet with the reference note so yeah you we

are importing the SD database that should be working and yeah so you can check it out and syncing and everything yeah so there are like two options I mean there was two options with the parity between clients we can either singly train or you can basically import like under their existing house the cache the database so I actually don't remember like so we had like an open issue for importing the database cuz we did it for bitcoins but oh is it okay it's working as well here sir any other questions and if you want to run it by the way I'm yeah I can run the release version because the debugging version will take

a little longer I do you plan to expand with respect to the original specification of the protocol right now not so we're right now I'm focusing on like sapling and sprout specifications of course if like blossom is going to come up I think this will come like of course in our like timeline but for now we are like optimizing in the current we have first sapling yeah sure so I think that impossible in future it's possible to do something yet we have for example with parity theorem client so basically you have a set of command line options that allows you to kind of load some specific

chain or specific like some specific options so in parity theorem we currently support I don't know like by default 15 different cryptocurrencies and some of those cryptocurrencies have you know like slightly modified state transition mechanism there's you know some open you up who can ablute enabled or and stuff like that so I think it's possible to also make this kind of modifications to Z cache implementation and future and allowed you to experiment with with the code base with with the protocol and maybe possibly submit some like improvement protocol proposal to to the secret foundation I was specifically thinking about the rust implementation

of bulletproof she is the best one in performance so I was thinking that maybe you were thinking about it I mean I as far as I know as far as I know not yeah like this is not under it's worth to be said that Z cache crypto like they're all discipling stuff is also implemented in rust so all of their stuff is also already in rust it's just wrapped around a bunch of C++ and yeah and like having some insight into working on this a part the goal is to give more power to the Z cash foundation over the electric coin

company and therefore like start having a conversation of which improvements are possible and start collaborating in a slightly more decentralized fashion thanks for good friend yeah all right it's a thank Ana and marek again [Applause]
