Liberland | Building the Freest Nation on Blockchain - Vit Jedlicka | Common S3nse - 2026

CryptoCanal Talks · 10 Sept 2026 · 32:14

Vit Jedlička presents Liberland, a seven square kilometer territory between Croatia and Serbia, as a tax-free country governed as a meritocracy in which citizens earn tokenized merits for their contributions. He argues that it meets the Montevideo criteria for statehood and outlines a structure that combines a Congress of merit holders, a Swiss-style citizen veto and a Senate of top contributors from which the president is elected, with the land registry and the DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) moving from Liberland's own blockchain to Ethereum. In the Q&A he recounts a backdoor planted in the Liberland blockchain, and he answers doubts that so small a territory can scale by arguing that a state limited to security, justice and diplomacy is not hard to run.

and I'll be with you this morning because I'm your aunt. And on that note, I was so happy because I invited Liverland. Liverland came to speak um last year actually, but I actually met Vit uh Jetica a few years ago and I don't know who has already spotted where Liberland is on the map, but I would like to warmly invite Vit to the stage to tell us about Liberland. And you ask me about the pin. Yeah, you well deserve it.

Great speech. Thank you for setting the tone of today. Um, quite a few of you probably know what Liberland is about and I'm here to to give you the overview of where we are heading right now and what is what is next. Uh, and yes, in Liberland you will never get to have to pay taxes. One of the things that everybody that becomes citizen of liberal land has to swear that you will not use the state to tax your fellow citizens. You will not steal from them directly or indirectly through the state. And I think really this is one of the next evolutionary steps to which our societies need to uh jump

into. If I can get my presentation it would be great. Yes. Wonderful. So yeah, let's try to play this one. Just a short video about how Liberland look like and who are the key people behind Liberland. We were very happy that Zaharit architects jumped in and uh they made a design for how Liberal could look like in Metrtopia. You can see it. We have really cool guys like Ron Paul that showed support or crazy people like president of Argentina that applied for citizenship of Liberland and recently recently got it or Vitalik of course

who's been with us for many years and now received the highest award of Liberland recently now in Prague and uh yes they told us it was impossible to even visit Liberland for eight years. People were arrested just for coming very close to Liberland and now we're building in Liberland. It's not easy, but we managed to get over that stage and people are now successfully living in Liberland. We just got a record from Croatian um police that yes they confirmed that there are settlers living there more than couple of month now permanently. So are the one of the very important things about a country uh which is liberland is that you have permanent population right like that's

one of the key elements of of building a real country and yes we managed to get into that stage when even Croatia now recognizes that we have permanent settlement of Liberland. Uh so it's a seven square kilometers of land between Croatia and Serbia never claimed by either country. Chile we when we established Liberland in 2015 we received this letter from the foreign ministry of uh Serbia that they don't mind creation of Liberal it was not formed or their territory while Croatia keeps on claiming this is actually Serbia so very special piece of land perfect size for building a new country seven square kilometers three times bigger than Monaco u and very I would say reasonable geography as well in that

sense that we are in Europe where I believe the freedom ideas are most needed especially now when you see this people like Musk pushing against the crazy regulation and taxation in Europe we can really become a beacon of this let's say new system of governance here in in Europe so what you need to have a country by the way has anybody of you ever considered starting a new country nobody really come on it's um starting a new country is not that easy as it's a special club only 200 members or organizations out there right now recognized by UN but there is this

interesting Monte video convention on what is a country and very important element is that it doesn't matter if other country recognizes you or not you can still be a country and there are many examples like that for example Somaliand right that is a country for many years now it recently got recognized by Israel for the first country recognized it The definition of country is not in international defined by the fact that somebody else has to recognize you. It would be like this chicken egg and egg problem. If you have permanent population and now we have confirmation we have permanent population even by Croatia. If you have defined territory, we have very well definfined territory and we are just moving our catastaster from our own blockchain to Ethereum

blockchain for more security. If you have government, we have a decent government. I will show you who the guys are for many years now. If you have capacity to enter into relations with other countries and yes, Liberland has the capacity to enter into relations. I was actually in parliament two days ago here and we have some very strong allies that are very likely to be members of next government. So in any country almost around the world, we have some good relations with some government that we can we can build up on. And yes, we are like represented in more than 90 countries around the world. I'm very excited that I'm heading to the Embassy of Free Minds. Have you heard

about that organiz organization here in in Amsterdam? I think that would be really perfect spot for Liberland embassy as well. So cross fingers that we can make some some deal with them. But they are really powerful. It's actually the second biggest special book library in the world after Vatican as well. So they are very very interesting organization. Lovely potential. We've got 1300 citizens out of 8003,000. Um and yes, if you have signed up on the website, we consider you that you are our national, but it doesn't mean that you're a citizen yet. We really ask people to do something for the country.

It can be of course financial contribution, but it also can be that you move to Liberland for a couple of weeks or of course you can provide some any other cool service to move Liberland forward. Yes, countries are bas based on support of a group of serious people that want to build a country. We started Liberaland on 13th of April 2015. It was actually birthday of Thomas Jefferson. We wanted to invoke the spirit of American revolution. I believe there is really space for another tea party. The the tea tax was very little compared to the taxes that we are paying right now. People are really complacent with that. You know, we're living in a societies with 60 70% taxes if you accumulate everything. Doesn't make any

sense whatsoever to me. And yes, democracy was something which the founding fathers actually weren't against. All these three guys have written letters and essays on how democracy is not a good the best system for governance. how it's a mob rule and how it usually ends up with majority stealing money from minority and yet America somehow 200 years later became the democracy it's embedded everywhere but it's very good to look into uh into into that element why why has Americans forgotten that their founding fathers were very strongly against democracy and in a favor of republic and it's also important to realize that what is the

difference between democracy and republic in democracy you can vote about anything in republic you really have a strong constitution that prevents for example people robbing each other right so um liberal also has elements of democracy and republic but first and foremost we are meritocracy and democracy is also interesting thing you know it it is kind of a god that has failed in some sense if you heard about Herman Han's hope book this is named God that has failed. It is a system which really averages everything. So the the decisions by democracy are the smart ideas are compensated by stupid ideas in

in different senses but there are better systems for governance than democracy. Um one more one more chart which I really like. I actually been following this uh these ideas from the time when I was studying political science and I'm also economist by training. But this is a cool chart which you might find useful for understanding human emotions but also for understanding political systems and freedom in general. So yes like everything that we are living in is a vibration in s some sense everything is energy and vibration. Emotions are also vibrations. you can sort them out in some order and you can combine it with different political systems. And with Liberland really for us it's important

uh to enjoy the creation of Liberland stay high on the emotional scale and uh create with enthusiasm a new new society. If you fall below if you fall into covered hostility you end up having communist society. If you fall into anger it's usually associated with fascism. But there are these places which are classical liberal and that are places like Switzerland or Singapore which are really able to create prosperity in a in a good way. And one of those examples is of course Singapore where meritocracy not necessarily as a tokenized meritocracy something that we're building but meritocracy culturally has been strongly built into the society. They have managed to do something which is extraordinary, right?

They managed to or almost 60x the economy since the foundation of the country. You can really make a huge um economic miracle if you just let people do their things and you don't interfere too much. We believe in Liberal we can do better. We can do better and when it comes to the structure of the meritocracy, but really the meritocracy for us is a key. people that are capable and they have the merits to govern the country should be the ones leading it. But in our case, what is merit? Merit really is a tokenized piece of sovereignty. I think when we are talking about real assets, ultimately sovereignty, tokenized sovereignty will be the real world asset

number one because as you have said there is always some middleman, right? And usually in our case it's the government and if we create a really good government that really runs a certain territory we will end up with the most prosperous society out there just by the definition of that. Uh so in liberal land we don't have taxation but whenever you contribute in in any kind of way to liberal you get merits and uh merits are tied with your citizenship. You have to collect 5,000 of them to to become a citizen. So basically you have to have minimal stake in Liberland. But I think it's the right way to go.

Everybody in Liberland has a stake. And if it's if if Liberland makes a major progress, it distributes dividends. We already distributed the first dividend, Liberal dollar. That was a lot of fun. Um so this is the current uh Congress. Uh great great people that we have on board. Uh Justin Sun is our prime minister. Maybe you heard about him. Uh it's a bit of a controversial figure in crypto world, but also fun to have the wealthiest prime minister ever on planet Earth. Uh but also also the first prime minister to ever fly to space. I think he's the right type of prime minister to be the first prime minister. But of course the elections in Liberland are

every three months. We are actually pretty quick in turning over and you can apply for for and and challenge Justin Sun position as a prime minister very easily in Liberland. So we will see what will happen the next elections is in two months. So you have a opportunity to do that. We've got some other great guys like for example Tariq Kbasi also representative of British king at the same time or uh Mikl Tachnik our former minister of justice right now uh another great legal expert that really helped to to put together the constitution. Um so in Liberland we are actually a meritocracy as I said and that is uh

manifested through congress but we are also republic. We we don't let the government to do anything else but take care of security, justice and diplomacy. We want this corporation to be really focused on those basic elements that the government should do. We're also democracy because any decision can be vetoed by majority of citizens meaning any decision whatsoever or even any person in government can be basically vetoed by democracy which is a interesting element. We took that from Switzerland. And I think it's a very smart way of application of democracy.

Democracy cannot make the positive decisions, but it can get rid of the decisions it doesn't like. And we are a little bit of a monarchy. We have a Senate like a second chamber people that really were the biggest contributors of of Liberland at some point. And from the Senate, the president is elected. So if you would like to replace me, you better run for senate or you ask how to become senator. And uh it's all powered by blockchain.org. It's our custom blockchain. We are actively working now uh on auditing of the Ethereum based uh DAO that we want to migrate to to avoid all the bridges in order to go big with Liberland and let's launch the merit which we haven't

really launched in the 10 years now it's getting ready to be launched but it's already all everything is tested we we found good and bad in in doing these things of course it's fun to build a country with anarchists. So you can imagine all kinds of stories. Um yeah, this is another another view on the whole thing. Again, meritocracy is making the positive decisions and everybody that has merits actually gets to vote about any regulation or law that gets to be placed after the Congress votes about something still get gets to be directly confirmed by the merit holders.

Uh yes and our constitution is in still in draft but I think we're very close to finalizing it. It's it's a reasonable document. Uh feel free to read it. Comment you can comment directly into the constitution if you feel like it's a it's a good one. This was a first reading of the constitution. We had really great guys with us. For example, the chairman of the governing parties in Czech Republic. By the way, two chairmans out of four chairmans of the guys that are in government are Liberland citizens also, which is kind of cool that the new government in Czech Republic is very, very close to Liberland. On the left there is this guy that built all these structures in Liberland. Uh also run the beach bar. We

decorated him on this opportunity. And in the middle is Herman Hanse, the very famous economists that I would say is one of the closest to my heart when it when it comes to active academic people that were that and help help us to put together this book about liberal constitution which you can also download. This was the first proof that we can make diplomatic relations. We actually signed this agreement with Somaliand government. Who is familiar with Somaliand by the way? Has anybody heard about Somaliand? Yeah, there is this country again uh which is 5 million people living there bigger than United Kingdom and it was not recognized until recently by anybody else but Liberland.

Now it's recognized also by Israel where we signed a memorandum of understanding with them back in 2017. So two years after inception of Liberland we already proved that we can build diplomatic relations and we are running interesting projects there including some mining operations. This was my recent meeting with the president of Somaliand in Davos. Uh if you're interested in mining gold in Somaliand, we've got this as nice side project. You can join the WhatsApp group discussing that. I also met the president of Croatia and Serbia. Of course, this was really nice meeting. I think Milanovich is really one of the special guys that can understand Liberland and uh I hope we will be able to build up those relations. What is really important for us of course is

physical presence in Liberland and there is this push like to build a global network and I met for example Cherry Bowett that wants to help us with uh um building this global network also quite u you know polarizing figure here in Netherlands or should we focus more on physical presence in Liberal I think we really need both we really need strong network of people globally that that push liberal forward that are well connected through the latest technologies using the best currencies like Zanov for example and uh and also people that are physically there and they're helping us to build. So these are all the projects that we are currently having around Liberland but we need more uh and uh this is actually

nice project for the second phase of Liberland Village which is called Liberland Ark Village. If we can play it it would be great. So we purchased the parcels 5 kilometers away from Liberland and the immigration to Liberland will be in two stages. People will have to first get residency in Serbia. Uh and after that and this is actually some of the historical buildings that we purchased and also want to turn into a a spa and a boutique hotel. Uh but after after getting residency in Serbia, we should be able to permanently move them to Liberland or that at least this is the latest u plan that [music] we have. And we're building

these zones, 32 of them uh around a nice lake uh that is there next to this spa and and longevity clinic that we want to develop literally as a first phase of physical development outside of Liberland. again only 5 kilometers away but just kind of a base for all the all the settlement into Liberland and by the way having a Serbian residency is not bad at all you don't have to become taxpayer if you don't stay more than half year but it also gives you different opportunities but I need to get to the next slide now please doesn't work please please move me to next slide please not possible

please. Okay so uh Serbia is actually pretty cool nice bonus to Liberal citizenship and another great bonus that you can get and it's also interesting for people especially here in Netherlands is a parag by residency. It's now also part of the deal if you decided to become citizen of Liberal and we give you basically included services in in becoming resident of Paraguay. And we couldn't really beat the residency in Paraguay. It's the cheapest one. You don't have to visit more than once in a year. So you get a nice bundle uh of becoming Paraguay citizen basically taxfree as long as you don't stay more than half year in any country. and uh and you become also citizen of Liberland at the

same at the same time. We are having bunch of really cool events coming up. One of them is uh in November uh we've got a longevity conference that's like the biggest one that is coming up. Otherwise, we have actually events every single weekend in Arc or in in Liberland. We had Liberulco, very big conference there. We can host up to 200 people. We can take them to Liberland on the boat. It's already a nice venue for all kind of great events. So, thank you very much. Uh, thank you for having me and uh I I hope to see you in Liberal.

Is there is there is any questions? I'm happy to answer. >> Yes. Um, actually since we have a little bit of time, I wanted to make sure that people knew. >> Hello. Hello. >> Well, that there's a slido basically. So, if you guys go to slido.com, sli o and you enter the code 2626, >> I can look at your questions. Is that what the Liberland passport looks like? >> Yeah, this is this is the Paraguay stuff and Liberland passport. Uh, but um yeah, if if we jump back, we can still see the video from the Liberal Co. I think that's a that's a nice video. We can see the venue what we've got there.

>> Let's look at it. >> It's just one minute. >> Imagine a Your biggest dreams for a freer future aren't just ideas. They're the foundation of everything we do. Welcome to Libero. It's where you'll find your tribe and help us build the world we've always wanted. Secure your spot in the movement today at liberulco.com.

Your community, your inspiration, your future. We can't wait to see you there. >> Yeah, I think it's it's a nice venue. So, if you think about doing some special u you know workshop or or company event, please don't consider Liberland. Also weddings. Liberaland is becoming very popular for weddings. uh recently. So >> this is if you have any questions for slido.com code 2626 because vit we have a little bit of time before the next panel about wallets and you mentioned that there was only a few crazy people out there that started a country and you are one of them and you also slightly mentioned that it was crazy to organize this with other anarchists. That's my

question. Could you share one anecdote about because this this was a good presentation. We got the nice Liberland PR presentation, but I want to know a good story. >> Well, there's lots of lots of >> lots of interesting stories. So, for example, when we started our blockchain, uh I didn't realize that uh it would be of course a challenge also personal challenge. So, maybe it wasn't the best idea to pick the CTO from Croatia that likes to talk to Croatian Secret Service a lot. So I I didn't expect it, but yes, he planted a back door into the blockchain. So we had a we had more than like a year of back and forth of what we're going to do with it. But this is

an advantage when you basically build that blockchain solution like a sovereign solution. If we were on Ethereum and that back door was on Ethereum, there would be very difficult to actually like resolve it. Uh but since since we were like uh we we knew all everybody that was running these nodes so we had le leverage to basically get over over that stage in Liberland. But of course like there are things that from outside and from inside that make uh creation of new countries a little bit challenging. So >> all right >> I'm always ready for next challenge.

>> Well we have challenging questions so strap on. How does this differ from an international corporation? Is it sovereign? Does it have to fit into the type of legal entities that that existing countries allow? >> Well, yes. Like our our be from beginning we said this is a sovereign entity and sovereignty really starts with your decision being sovereign, right? So there is nobody's going to like push sovereignty on you. No, it's a it's one of the things and yes like sovereignty comes with the capacity to have monopoly over enforcement of physical violence. So this is a difference between international corporation and sovereign state and but Liberland is structured primarily as a

as a corporation in that sense that meritocracy basically is a corporate structure. >> Next question. Why does Israel support this project before any other country? Israel supported Somali land. They did not support Liberland yet. Uh and uh you know there are some speculations that they would like to build like a space for people that they want to relocate from Gaza and that stuff but I don't really know to be honest with you. It's just an interesting fact that uh Somali land is actually fully functioning country for almost 30 years now, right? Like they really don't have too much enemies. Somalia doesn't like

them to be sovereign. And it's sometimes it's really crazy like the other day I was actually in New York and I was uh I was just flying from Somali land from some meetings there and I landed and it was a Somali Somalia taxi driver and I told him I came from Somal Somali land and I had a nice meeting and he told me to get out of the taxi. Like can you imagine like Somalia is one of the most messed up countries in Africa but still there is this like huge uh problem that for example people from Somalia have with you just visiting Somali land which really has never done anything bad to Somalia just like declared independence and is able to protect it for for many years. So there

is this strange occultist belief of some people that for example some other people don't have the right to self-govern themselves for no reason whatsoever which of course uh we can also observe sometimes with Liberland but you know we are doing it persistently we're doing it in a positive way and it's really difficult to fight something which is positive and is just trying to build so yes we got bulldozered a couple of times in Liberland but we don't care we just keep on building Wow. Next question. And I'll keep uh I'll also take questions, but we have a few here. Why was that strip of land never claimed by Serbia or Croatia?

I assume Liberland's territory was part of Yugoslavia in the past. >> Yes. Yes. So when the two countries split, the two existing entities did not lay claim. So yes, like technically we're former piece of Yugoslavia. Historically under the maps of Serbia, under the catastro maps of Serbia, but after the split, Serbia did not put this particular territory into the catastroph of Serbia. >> Okay. Um, a lot of models work when they're small. At 7 kilometers, Liberland can't scale. As a conference and wedding venue, can it stress test the ideology outside of the party?

Well, of course, we believe we can. We can. We just need some resources uh to build all the infrastructure around it. But literally like taking care of security, justice and diplomacy is not a big deal, right? Like it's if you don't try to do everything for everybody, then like running a country is not that difficult job. Um I would say >> okay about the constitution, is it a kind of upgradable smart contract? Can can it evolve and change over time based on the needs of the people?

>> Yes, I mean there are things that make it rigid so that the overall concept cannot be completely changed but the smart contract is upgradable. Right now again we're running audit fable has just finished the audit of the smart contract. You're also very welcome uh to look into it and uh yes it is constitution as we have written it basically translated into the smart contract uh and yes there are some some minor updates compared to the previous version of the smart contract which we were running on substrate but uh it's still I would say we still have a nice u first place in being the first sovereign entity to actually u build its

constitution itution first as a smart contract. >> Okay. Uh and finally, does Liberland plan to have a monopoly over over physical force, a requirement of being a sovereign state? Could that happen in Serbia or elsewhere? >> Well, we want to of course not do it in Serbia. We want to do it in Liberland. So um yes like that's one of the important things and of course it's also one of those critical shifts of power but uh we do have on horizon a very nice opportunity for for some of that to happen. We just need to be patient uh because uh EU is stepping into the game

and they are they're positively I would say stepping into into the game right now when it comes to the borders. So there is a a big opportunity window especially in next nine months that things will go and we have to al also be ready. So we still have some work homework to do when it comes to this elements. Uh we managed to again sustain the settlers there last three years somebody was living even during the high flood we had two highest floods in last 40 years in Liberland. We still managed actually to keep the people permanently present in Liberland and uh and now there will be huge media coverage. They actually came to Liverpool for example Deutsche or Al Jazzer or son and Devel

was there. So there will be another huge wave of media coverage about Liberal and I think neutral to slightly positive coverage like I was surprised for example Deutsche is coming for the second time in this year and they did already 40-minute piece about us and they're doing another hour and a half documentary which is pretty pretty surprising. >> Well thank you so much V. Thank you so much common sense. I'm looking at my my wall. Oh, I see cloaked here. I wanted to also add a few things because I think when I when I started the stage, I always sort of forget that what is not common sense is a country losing its own um freedom. And

that's why we'll have a panel about it tomorrow. Because a little backstory, when I started doing these big conferences after Defcon Connect 2022, I did not expect that one of ours would be arrested and that his life would stop, right? And we didn't expect that something that we all took for granted, we had built a mixer that anyone could enjoy, that anyone could use, that was fully permissionless, and that could give privacy to a lot of people. Anyone basically anyone could use tornado cash actually anyone even today can use tornado cash and isn't that wonderful isn't that what we wanted a unstoppable

smart contract that give privacy to all and we have it but that's also why I dedicated the last three etham and common sense to privacy because today Roman storm is fighting in the US and Alexi Perezv is still fighting here in the Netherlands so freedom And privacy is not something to be taken for granted and it's something that we're still working on.
