Layer 2 Interoperability with BaaS (Bridge as a Service)

EthPrague 2024 · 31 May 2024 · 15:44

A founder of an optimistic interoperability protocol for rollups argues that cross-chain transfers between L2s are held back by high gas fees and slow confirmation, and proposes verifying a transaction only when fraud is suspected. He then abstracts this into bridge as a service, so applications can run cross-network actions such as buying an NFT on one rollup with funds on another without handling the infrastructure. A ZK bridge comparison cites a paper where proof generation took about 20 seconds, and the fraud window is limited to roughly an hour by how far back block hashes can be referenced.

[Music] okay so oh can you hear me hi everyone thank you for having me today my name is Tomo cofounder CEO at F Network I'll be speaking about uh optimistic R to interoperate protocol uh once again uh let me introduce myself uh my name is Tomo Co CEO at FAS Network I founded the first company and developed a run to run

protocol rent platform called proof of running in 2018 and I S it 2022 yeah and then I co-funded F Network at the same year and yeah my rubbing is Japanese anime actually yeah I'm from Japan so oh yeah so are there any Japanese anime rber here yeah thank you so much yeah I wanted to actually yeah we the anime t-shirt today but I lost my my burgage in the airport yeah it's okay so yeah so okay anyway so let introduce about feather

network uh briefly so FEA network is an optimistic R to interoperability protocol so we have over we have integrated with over 10 R networks uh both of optimistic R up and z r up and then recent Trend uh hybrid optimistic the and we are supported by the Assan Foundation optimis Foundation as R to inity protocol uh we Al provide A2 run uh social running have specialized for R 2 technology so R 2 has integrated into optimistic rooll up based networks at

this time such as optimism arbitrum or base and so yeah and then users can issue soland token certificates for taking a curriculum about R to technology such as optim up Z roll up Bridge or inpd or something else yeah let's get into the main topic uh before discussing R to interoperability let's take a look at recent Trend uh I understand as you know all but yeah last year was the first year of rer 2 uh in my opinion and it's still freshing our memory that 2022 or

2020 was the first year of r one uh for example Sana aan bance or something and many Ray one is rapidly GRE due to the emergence of AUM the scalability problem you know but the following year r one in became a program in the 2021 or something so and then in 2022 R 2 grew rapidly to improve the scalability of AUM so but inter pity became issue issue again so that was last year and it remains a problem this

year uh in addition there has been a rapid increase in networks recognized as R 3 recently so R 3 interop will be a problem in the future I mean the next year or the after next year so yeah uh I understand you know all these problems but the challenge for Raya 2 and Raya 3 it's interoperability between networks using different rollup Frameworks for example uh interoperability between such as mode using op stacks and x-ray using polygon

cdk uh as you know both evbm compatible and buil on etherium so I mean the interoperability itself is not a serious problem I mean the problem is the high gas feed and slow speed of cross Network transaction like a uh cross chain transactions so this means that users have to use a lot of their assets as gas fee or root their Ro their opportunity for example for Arbitrage across networks or something else so the present Network Works optimistic interoperability protocol specialized for R to solve this problem

the feather Network protocol incorporates an optimistic roll up mechanism into the inter for R 2 so I mean the specifically the protocol doesn't verify normal transaction but only verify the transactions suspected of fraud so the the optimistic protocol only verify transaction requested by parit cod disput in the Fant protocol so this means that the majority of transactions are recorded to the network without being verified so I think you will understand better if you actually see the demo then

if I explain it in words so yeah a prison of dis phant is an optim IC protocol so if the demo doesn't work let's be optimistic yeah so what you should look for when see the demo is speed and gas fee uh speed and low gas fee so let's go this is yeah this is our Bridge interface bu using the fan optimistic protocol so let's try the bridge between optimism and B as an example here can

see so you can see super cheap and super fast just for a moment yeah that's all so this is the power of optimistic protocol uh here is a table comparing it to other Bridge Project in terms of costant speed using other uh interoperability protocol So in theory an optimistic protocol like a bridge or something is the most cost effective and fastest compared to any other Bridge Bridges so uh this figure is from one few months ago so this means

the recent proton sheding has made it even cheaper now oh yeah this is my opinion yeah so I understand that DK is still Hot Topic so naturally some of you may be wondering how it compares to zik bridge so Z Bridge is a protocol that alls a specific State change that occur change that occurs in one network to be proven uh in other in the other network by using zik SS so it's Unique in that it AR communication between all Networks because it can prove State change rather

than application specific Communication in other words uh although it's called Z Bridge it can be applied to messaging uh communication between networks as well as Bridges so uh maybe you know but there is a published Barr research paper on Z Bridge from which must can be run so yeah the conclusion is that practical application is still in the future in my opinion but the results of performance test have been published and uh briefly presented here so the the the table of performance test

in this paper is included so this performance test was not a bridge between rayer two but rather the more challenging Cosmos and aoran messaging communication so maybe sorry yeah it might be a little hard to see there but the results were that it took about 20 seconds to generate the proof as well D proof I mean the you know the size of the proof was 131 bytes and the gas fee for the verification was uh 2002 27k G roughly $1 us calculated at G uh 20g

R so my personal impression is that neither the speed nor the gas feed is very effective for using ZK for the bridge uh or interop with the transactions so unlike the expected dk4 to like DK roll up or something after much research we came up with the concept of bar standard for bridge as a service to solve R to interoperability problem so yeah as I stands for bridge as the service is an abstraction of the optimistic interoperability protocol down to the

application layer I mean the tent application so B all developer to focus on application development we worrying about uh Network fragmentation and other infrastructure in convenience so by incorporating phant networks bu solution applications can optimistically execute cross Network transactions for example cross n transaction such as uh purchasing NFD on optimism with is on arbitrum can be executed instantly with ly

yeah this is our overview of bus brid service so uh reaking and R roll up as the service are the recent Trend but the ecosystem can exist with them uh anyway so BR exist between the application layer and the infrastructure layer and can be said to abstruct the infrastructure for applications so I mean it plays a particularly strong role in abstracting the fragmentation of the execution R for example yeah Ro up optimism OB stack or OB think Z or

something and then we believe that this can be integrated into both monistic and Moda blockchain Trend so the pH network is current currently an interoperability protocol focused on Ray 2 this is because Ray 2 can verify transactions with just the Brock head and Brock hush so this diagram illustrates transaction validation in optimistic protocol so the transactions in eum are stored in Brock technically Brocks and eventually output as Brash so since this is Hash data it goes

with a thing that changing the data will output a different block has in other words uh the consistency between the information in the Brock where the interop transaction is stored and the information is in the Brash is verified so as you can see the the information contained in the Brock is extensive making the fee of verification so high and with optimistic protocol the gas fee can be significantly reduced because the sequence of events is verified only when an irregular occurs so this is a very simple and secure mechanism because just Brock head and

Brock as I said earlier are required for transactions in eorum while transaction verification in inter oper between the other Ray one chain and eum for example between aan and ethereum or S and ethereum is a completely different process so this is exactly why Fant offers a interoperability specifically for R 2 uh finally yeah regarding the oh sorry the challenges AUM limits the number of Brocks it's 20 56 Brocks so this means that if fr regularity occurs at the

optimistic protocol the regularity must be noted within around 1 hour technically 5 51 51st minutes yeah so the diagram shows that all transaction with frament or not captured in the Brock and eventually output of the broadcast in other words the broadcast must be referenced to verify the transaction but in the case of etherum the Broast can only be differenced up to 20 uh 256 blocks ago during which time it must be verified where the transaction is

forment or not uh however yeah solutions to solve this challenge already being developed for example aom is developing a protocol that we row for broadcast of more than 260 uh 256 Brocks yeah thank you for your listening today [Applause] okay uh yeah feel free ask me anything now or de session this venue thank you so much

thank you are there any Japanese anime rber no okay let's talk about thank you
