How Open-source Can Boost Your Dev Skills
ProtoLayers Talks · December 2024 · 14:06
Paco Villetard of OnlyDust explores how contributing to open-source projects can raise a developer's skill level, improve collaboration and strengthen the wider web3 ecosystem. The talk frames open-source work as a public good and as a practical route for builders to learn in the open alongside protocol teams.

hello everyone I'm Pak V I'm a co-founder of only dust and today we will talk about how to grow your skill as a Dev because as you know blockchains needs you blockchain needs Dev needs talented Dev to build the future to experiment to play with that Tech and it's why they distribute grants they organize hackathon they organize Hacker House it's to attract new devs but they want good and great devs and the question is how does one become a great
developers how can you grow yourself as a blockchain developers in the blockchain space because I think learning is easy it's easy to learn a new language it's easy to learn a new tech and with AI is even easier to learn new stuff you can experiment you can even ask to show some codes and you can understand New Concept very easily but the problem is learning passively doesn't make you a great not even a a good Dev you have to apply this knowledge with
intensity you have to apply this knowledge you have to play with it you have to re to really know this knowledge and real learning I think happens by doing the work and not any kind of work by doing real hard work you have to be um aiming at hard problems you have to love solving hard problems and real Learning Happens too when you work with others when you work with others who are more skillful than you are so if you mix hard problems with working with others I think it's a good path to apply your
learning and to grow as a Dev and do you know what best to do that open source it's not hackerson when you work one or two days on a project you will discard after it I think it's open source because in open source open source is open everybody can contribute to open source open source is hard you can find any problem you want if you're a beginners you can find hard problem for beginners and if you're an expert you can find hard problem for expert and open source is a multiplayers game you contribute with others on hard problem and I think it's a path to grow
yourself I really think it's the secret way to upgrade yourself if you think about a Dev you know on Twitter or a famous Dev in blockchain space I'm sure is contributing to a famous open source project and an important point is open source has no borders and it's important for me because I know a lot of talented devs from different countries of the world who have not the same access to opportunities as Western deaths contributing to open source is not an easy path but I I know it's a
highly rewarding path for motivating motivated deaths because open source contributing to open source can reward you in many ways it can help you work on hard problem as I said it can help you meet amazing peers maintainers High skill deps and obviously you will apply the skills you learned and it will also boost your reputation you will be known for your contribution you will be Associated to famous open source projects so we have created on this to help you choose and contribute to the best open source project and get the most of it you will create value and I
think you deserve a part of the value you you you will create so our goal is to create a clear path to success for web 3 Dev even even if you're a beginner or if you're an expert Dev so we build the platform to un board developers to different blockchain ecosystem through open source contribution so if you go to only do you can see you can create a profile think your GitHub even if you didn't have any GitHub contribution and you will we have a lot of filters different ecosystem uh if you want a project with many people project good for beginners you can filter by Tech and CH a project and the project
will have many good first issues not all the projects sometimes you have to to search a bit to find projects with a lot of good first issues and you will take a with first tisue and work on it and try to to to make your best best to to make it work and the maintainers is will be happy to to help you because we Source projects who want which want to to attract new deaths so I want to be clear good first issues are not easy issue the work will not be easy and it will be very hard but the maintenance are are here to to help you if you do the work if you are very
motivated that will help you grow other that so so yeah and on only dust each contribution is tracked and we will build for you a profile with the ranking and the top languages and the different ecosystem you contributed to because you will have access with this profile to um some kind of private opportunities so before um talking about opportunities uh I want to yeah show you some projects we have it's the most active project Pro Dojo is a tool chain for developing onch games Giza is machine learning kakarat evm build with
skyro Bitcoin uh um a debuger uh we have some SDK so a lot of projects for all um skills levels so yeah we work with uh 10 ecosystems of blockchain won St net Cosmos optimism stellar ethereum ethereum and uh yeah a lot of registered contributors and uh also we have some monetary Financial rewards because we work with foundations to design efficient grants program that rewards Builders and not grants Hunters because as I said previously Foundation wants
death and I think by giving money to death by doing hair drop that will attract good deaths but we work with them and we saw that no they attract Grand Hunter they attract people who are doing paperwork to to to get grants and don't deliver and our vision with only dust is we want to reward the work we don't want to reward the paperwork so with only just if you contribute to one of the projects you can get financial rewards I can't give you any the sum of the amount you will receive
because it depends of the complexity of the issue it depends of your skills and it depends of the the the time um spent with the maintainers but you I assure you you will get the share of the value you create we work hard to align the interest of developers projects open source projects and blockchains and after doing some contribution after receiving some Financial rewards you will get contacted if you have enough uh enough contributions by um um kind of Dev success manager is a beta program we we organize someone of
the community we will contact you to office different kind of opportunities so if you want to find a job we can help you find a job for example we have a a lot of contributors who find job at uh NE mind for example or doing some fellowship at the etherum foundation because they want to be a future C dep if you want to launch launch an open source project you want new contributors you want grants we can help you with that and if you want to build a company we can also help you with that because we have contacts in different foundation and there have VC's contact so you get access to these opportunities with your only profile so a bit some testimonial because I
think we truly changing lives uh of people of developers from anywhere in the world again it will not be easy uh but uh yeah so the quickest way to get started because I I took about a lot of things uh we have 300 projects on the platform it's not always easy to find a good project but we're working on it and the quickest way to get started is Emily who is there is organiz is organizing each month a hoodie week and the hoodie week is the only D open source experience with more intensity is the
experience in the a 10day week where we match developers in projects with projects in different blockchain ecosystem and you will get rewarded if you contribute if if your PR is merged during the OD week you will get rewarded and we help you much with the good projects um and all this happen in a 10 10day week so yeah it's very intense and yeah some stats about the ODI week and the most interesting start is 80% merge PR because ODI week is we have a lot of beginers Dev we didn't do any contribution previously we didn't do any opens
and 80% P merge is really fantastic really impressive and uh I think it's maintainers are very very helpful and help the contributors because I I know for the first PR submitted that don't do a lot of testing and the maintainance help them and uh so yeah I'm very proud of the h% so if you want if you can be interested in joining the next odak I don't know the exact date but I think it's at the end of November but the best way is to go to telegram or you can go to only dust and we have um um a menu on it's it's hackerson and you can see the
the exact date and on the Lun date you will have the good first issues and it's a bit competitive because you have to apply some issues have like five or 10 cidate but don't hesitate to yeah apply on issue you will be interested to and I'm sure you will get one and if you want to meet the community because I said the community is everything and we have some real success stories but you are not forced to to believe me but you can come to our meetups it's a private Community Meetup but if you join um and you said you come from me or from protus uh Emily will will accept
you so thank you very much [Applause] anyone have any question okay you mentioned first issues aren't necessarily easy issues yeah what would you say makes a good first issue uh for project yeah it's it's an issue that well scoped well well defined um some contributors spend more spend a lot of times on an issues of if you have
a clear road map for your project I think you have to to find issues that are outside of the road map uh clear scoped features or currently we're working on some challenges good first issue where a contributors can do this issue over and over because it's not very efficient to to to quickly um ship features it's ISU to un board contributors so you have to if you have a project you you are you must willing to unboard new contributors you must willing to to spend times for them and invest your time and uh because you will discover some real
gem thank you any next question okay so thank you Pap for your time [Applause]
