Ethereum's Latest Upgrade: Fusaka
Devcon and EF Talks · 3 Dec 2025 · 2:47
A short overview of Fusaka, the Ethereum network upgrade that several contributors describe as centered on scaling and making life easier for users. They explain that more data means more blobs and so more capacity for rollups (layer 2 networks), since data is today's limiting factor, and that support for secure devices such as mobile phones lets users authenticate with a fingerprint through passkeys, reducing friction for onboarding to non-custodial wallets. Block and transaction size caps are said to help raise the gas limit while keeping fees low, with scaling the main chain (L1) and the next upgrade, Glamsterdam, presented as what comes next.

We upgrade Ethereum two times a year with major changes to how the protocol operates and the next [music] one upcoming is called Fusaka. Foraka is the uh the new upgrade of Ethereum. >> It's centered around scaling [music] and making life easier for users of Ethereum giving rollups L2s [music] much more scalability also brings really exciting upgrades on the other two domains. So on the UX side on on the scale the [music] L1 side as well. >> Yeah, this is no longer an experiment. This is an inevitability. It means that [music] we can onboard everyone to Ethereum while still preserving the reason it existed.
>> We are not going to sacrifice decentralization in pursuit of scaling. >> But securely is the key word. >> Ethereum will scale and [music] become more secure at the same time. >> Particularly the scaling benefits both for the L1 as [music] well as for the L2s. >> Really is introducing something uh fundamentally [music] new with its earas technology. More data means more blobs which means more capacity for rollups. That data today is the limiting factor when it comes to the things that roll up needs from Ethereum. >> And so if we can [music] reduce the constraint of DA, we can reduce the constraint of what can be built on Ethereum. You get the censorship persistent properties of Ethereum in DA itself. And then we [music] have these great UX features.
>> The addition of this one. This unlocks the the uses of secure devices like mobile phones >> which allows mobile users to [music] authenticate themselves using their fingerprint especially pass keys which are coming to L1 Ethereum. >> This is really important because it's [music] going to increase or even reduce the friction for onboarding new people to non-custodial wallets. It's possible for builders to really think about a very simple endto-end [music] user experience >> that don't compromise on security for [music] the end user.
>> Some of the other Fusaka upgrades like uh block size and transaction size caps are going to also enable us to increase the gas [music] limit >> is it's basically increasing the capacity the number of transactions that [music] can be processed while keeping those really really low fees. >> It's all about trying to create an environment that scales the entire Ethereum ecosystem. Not only is it reliable [music] and it has 100% uptime, but it can ship with velocity. >> Our work is not done and this is like the definitive of Ethereum. >> For Saka will make layer 2 scalable and then closes this chapter and uh opens the door to the next chapter that we'll have a lot more of next year [music] which is uh scaling the L1.
>> What comes next? Like we're just getting started scaling. I'm super excited for Glamsterdam. >> There's never been a better moment than right now to to get involved. Scale the L1, scale the L2s, and simplify the user experience.
