Crypto & the Sustainable Development Goals - Gabriela Chang
ETHDenver 2022 · February 2022 · 11:28
Gabriela Chang connects blockchain technology to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, examining where crypto tools like transparent supply chains, tokenized carbon credits, and decentralized finance could genuinely advance goals around poverty, climate, and financial inclusion. The talk is candid about the gap between that potential and what the industry has actually delivered so far.

the sustainable development goals and that is how this is amazing oh it's not open there anyway i will say it i'm very impressed i'm happy to see this interest of how this amazing technology can bring social economic and environmental evolution i'm gabriela chang co-founder of ethic hub and i'm quite confident today after my brief talk you all leave this place feeling better like superheroes with the power to change the world because money is a superpower if you use it to be proud of our profits
today we're going to talk about how crypto can change the world um until now we tend to be too focused on how on the on the monetary value of money but money is a tool it's a vehicle to generate happiness and well-being and it's okay to make money generating common good caring for attending for others and feeling good of it japanese people have a name for it and it's ikigai and that's balance point in your life when you met an equilibrium between your productive and your personal life and you find purpose
so it is combined the combination of what you like to do what you love to do what you're good at what you get paid for and what is good for the world i like to set a simple example like a chef you are very good at cooking you get paid for it you make a living out of it and you love it how can it be good for the world well you can choose to cook only with zero kilometer products or to hire people that comes from disadvantaged collectives so uh the 17 sustainable development goals are a good guy to look for this way of bringing purpose to your business
so i invite you to meditate on this and think how can you bring all this together human relation with in since the history of human beings our relation with nature has evolved from the age of survival where we were hunters and collectors to a more extractive civilizations where we tame animals and plants so this is agriculture so it started from little villages to cities to empires and then it jumped up to the to the model to the order of the western industrial civilizations with a financial system that left excluded a
quarter of the world population creating tremendous disadvantages and a lot of pressure on the ecosystem so we are now at the tilting point between cows between collapse and the possibility to reinvent ourselves disruptive technologies can provide us the opportunity to create a new civilization of abundance where no one is left behind we're talking clean energy biotech food energy transport information everything you name it internet of things ai so we i believe crypto is the tool to generate the proper incentives to make
all these tools work together to make this change happen but technologies are only a tool even disruptive technologies so it depends on the proper intense incentives to make them work for good or for worse and i'm convinced here at ephember is most of the people with the knowledge to make this crypto work to make this change happen so this is a graphic to compare the evolution the adoption of internet against uh crypto as we can see right now we would be at the point of 98 more or less so we are far far from adoption yet for
mass adoption so it's still a niche where tech savings from developed countries benefit from the future finance but cryptocurrency's promise was to solve financial exclusion and to to build a new system we have the tools for it but we have to start thinking what are the problems of the previous system and it was the exclusion of this of this quarter of the world population by okay so we need to create the incentives to make these changes happen
there are some social outcomes unexpected outcomes coming from the crypto ward i would like to set two examples one would be plato and axi and the other the adoption of el salvador for bitcoin as a legal tender nobody i think nobody who have expected that thousands of families in philippines would be playing and earning more than the local wage that is imagine poor parents being able to provide their children and having time to take care of them because of this or el salvador whose population 70 percent of its population was unbanked and suddenly in a matter of weeks thousands of them have wallets and remittances increases 25 percent
i know these solutions are far from perfect but when the problems are so huge any improvement is welcome so the star of of uh crypto is defy but what percentage of it is focus on real economy on making a connection to solve the problems we have not so much until now but it is changing so instead of calling it the phi it's called refi regenerative finance in simple words it means to create more value than the one you extract and there are amazing examples of it one of it would be klima dao which in a few weeks in a few months
bought so many carbon credits that it pressed the price in the market in the heights so now it's very expensive to be a polluting company and it's very rewarded to carbon sequestrators but let's not forget climate change is not the only huge problem we have to solve there are in order to set like a common ground to address them the united nations uh launched the 2030 agenda to address them so they are 17 and i invite you to read them and to see also the subcategories because there you will find lots of amazing business
opportunities and it is very interesting because nowadays in the traditional world there is more capital than projects and a lot of concessional capital is willing i mean governments foundations ngos they are willing to provide funding absorbing first losses or longer terms that's it providing better conditions for the investor to attract them into the impact investing area and after those these years we already have enough data to prove that sustainable companies outperform traditional ones it's it's logic it's a
it makes sense because if you have access to easier money in better conditions you get this disadvantage and also because consumers customers are more willing to take these sustainable products and this gives you also a competitive advantage over the traditional ones we need to build a new economic system a new financial system that includes that quarter of the world population currently excluded and we have to stop seeing this as charity but as a huge opportunity so far most of the unbanked we're talking about two billion people most of
them are small farmers living in poverty despite having productive activities i mean they produce a third of the food in the world but they are excluded the the only way they can find working capital is from local shark loans because they don't have the proper even when they have a productive activity they don't have the proper uh collateral the proper warranties to borrow from the banks from the traditional system so their only source of financing is the small shark loans that they find in their communities and they pay over 100 percent interest for this little money it is called the poverty cycle i mean they produce in the case of coffee this small poor small farmers produce 80 percent of the total coffee production in the world and yet
they are left behind so the solutions offer are the approp sorry the problem is they don't have data to be evaluated as a risk management and they don't have assets to be tokenized so if they have developed a third way that is crowd collateral creating among everybody a collateral that can be used so lenders don't take a risk by lending him then this is also kind of blended finance in our way in an experimental blended finance to provide security to impact investing so we created a global community that benefits from interacting
jail farmers backing actual farmers we are a used case of defy in the real world generating value on both sides it's a win-win arbitrage so we are proving financial inclusion with impact is not only sustainable but very profitable for all the parties imagine if we could bring all these crypto incentives to promote the sdgs in the same way they do promote mining of bitcoins the way of innovations where water power steam power electrification
space age digital world and now we are leaving the next one and guess what it is not defy it is not blockchain is sustainability so after this we can think what is not sustainable will stop being profitable i invite you to be part of this change and to join and to adapt for these solutions of regenerative finance welcome to ethical hello gabriella and
