Tim Roughgarden

Tim Roughgarden is a Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University and the Founding Head of Research at a16z crypto. One of the leading figures in algorithmic game theory, he is known for seminal work on the price of anarchy of selfish routing, and his research has since shaped auction and mechanism design, machine learning, and the economic analysis of blockchain protocols, including widely cited work on Ethereum's EIP-1559 fee mechanism and LVR for automated market makers. His honors include the Gödel Prize, the ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award, the Kalai Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and election as an ACM Fellow, and he has written or edited ten books, including Twenty Lectures on Algorithmic Game Theory. Before Columbia he spent 15 years on Stanford's computer science faculty, following a PhD at Cornell, and he hosts a16z crypto's First Principles series on the scientific roots of blockchain technology.
