Sam Bankman-Fried

Sam Bankman-Fried is the founder and former CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX and co-founder of the trading firm Alameda Research. An MIT physics graduate who began his career at Jane Street Capital, he launched Alameda in 2017 and FTX in 2019, building the exchange into one of the largest in crypto, valued at $32 billion at its January 2022 peak. He became one of the industry's most visible figures, known for effective altruism advocacy, major political donations, and splashy sponsorships including naming rights to the Miami Heat's arena. In November 2022 FTX collapsed amid revelations that customer funds had been misappropriated, and a federal jury convicted him in November 2023 on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy for stealing billions in customer deposits. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024 and is appealing the conviction.
