Hester Peirce

Hester Peirce has served as a commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission since January 2018 and is widely known across the crypto industry as Crypto Mom, a nickname she earned after dissenting from the agency's 2018 denial of a Bitcoin exchange traded product. She built her reputation on the argument that clear rules serve markets better than regulation by enforcement, and in January 2025 she was named head of the SEC's new Crypto Task Force, charged with drawing workable regulatory lines for digital assets. Before joining the commission she was senior counsel on the U.S. Senate Banking Committee and a senior research fellow at George Mason University's Mercatus Center, and she holds a JD from Yale Law School. In May 2026 it was announced she will leave the SEC in November 2026 to teach securities regulation and digital assets at Regent University School of Law.
